Gift Certificates: Good or Bad?

do you think it's ok to give gift certificates to people as Christmas gifts? I know it makes sense and alot of people do appreciate them cuz of course they can pick something out they really want.
BUT there does seem something impersonal and lazy about it. Agree? Disagree? I'm talking about people who are close to you, gift certificates are great to get for people who aren't so close. Don't you feel better when you know that the person has gone out and spent some time considering what to buy you?

As the 'giver' for somebody i really like I would rather think about it and buy them something than give them a gift certificate unless they had told me that a gift certificate to a particular store is really what they want.

That or cash is all I give for christmas , that way people can get what they want.

i think its a good gift, but does come accross as a lazy gift imo

i still give them out to all my family, for restaurants mostly

but i think spoiled kids need savings bonds, thats what i'm getting my spoiled neice & nephew this year :thumbsup

Christmas and the holidays are so commercialized, I really do not think that many people consider gift cards or certifactes as being "impersonal" any more. In this day and age, people have things pre-wrapped and shipped online. i say go for it :thumbsup

Depends who it is for. Your sister who hates everything you buy, a gift certificate to her favorite store is a good idea. Your life partner...bad idea. Your mom....ewww...mine would have never gone for that, so it would depend on her own personality.

I always worry that either the amount will look too small or if I go higher to impress it will make them feel bad if their gift to me was of lesser value.
