Which brings us back to the Mini Cooper.

The modern remake of the classic British road-rally car has all the makings of a fem-mobile. It is small. It is darling and it has soft, friendly edges instead of sharp, aggressive angles.

But both the manufacturer and sports car enthusiasts have been fighting mightily to keep the Mini from swerving into the chick-car category.

It's no mistake that the new Mini played a starring role in the 2003 action flick The Italian Job, and that Matt Damon charged through Paris in a vintage Mini in The Bourne Identity.

"Is the Mini Cooper a chick car? No," insisted Andrew Cutler, communications manager for Mini U.S.A. He said that 60 percent of Mini Coopers are purchased by men, but he did not know how many bought the cars for their wives or daughters.

"Some people think small equals chick, but if you look at the wide stance of the Mini there's a toughness," Mr. Cutler continued. "It's akin to a British bulldog ... It's like some mild-mannered guy who on his off-hours is a superhero."

Car enthusiasts are similarly divided over the PT Cruiser.

"Is it a chick car, or a guy car?" Mr. Vasilash mused. "When it comes to the Cruiser, that question is still out there."

They're basically mini BMW's and they are really growing on me for a city car.

definite girl car. I was out this morning and saw a girl driving a pink one with cutesy stickers on it.

its a car to move in from a to b, not bad but you cant take anything with you, plus ever seen the interior ? plastic all plastic, not even close to the quality of a BMW

True that their link with BMW gives them extra 'guy' street cred, but still not a patch on owning a proper BMW.

My first car 35 years ago was a Mini Cooper and I've been thinking for a while that it's time I had another one in my life. :)

Did you ever see the interior of the original Minis?

There wasn't one - two bucket seats - a bench seat in the back - a gear stick - 3 tiny pedals - a steering wheel - a speedo and a fuel gauge and that was it.

Oh and rubber mats on the floor and a heater control. The very first ones didn't even have window winders - to open the window you pushed it to the side :)

The record in my old mini was 6 guys and 4 girls and at that point the sump was dragging rocks along the road surface :)

New mini = chick car

Original mini = cool for guys

The ultimate sleeper? Imagine pulling up next to a 'Vette at some traffic lights in this. Look fairly normal, although the engine sounds unusual. The 'Vette driver looks at you, and laughs. You look at the 'Vette driver, rev the engine, and grin. The lights turn green.

and it definitely doesn't drive like a 'chick car'. the mini has extremely good handling.

true and yes i did but this one is marketed as a bmw class alike car, the price is a lot higher then the original minis too, id rather have an old cooper then this new one

I saw a 2005 mini convertable the other day. the guy had the top down, and it was anything but a chick car.

The modern mini is not small. It is so frustrating to hear people talking about how "tiny" they are. It's weird. I think jsut the name has a psychological effect on people. Have any of you guys actually seen an old mini cooper side by side with a new mini cooper? I have. The difference is astounding. Hell, the mini is larger than most cars in it's class. It's a bastardization of one of Britain's greatest motoring achievements!

I'm going to buy a mini, but not one of those shitty new ones. Get me an old one and replace the engine with something from a Suzuki Swift. Add turbo. Rowr. :Graucho

If I didn't own an RX-7 that's got me in the hole, I'd definately drive one of these. Actually... if I didn't have an RX-7, then I'd go buy one, BUT, it's a tough choice between the RX and the Mini, for me.

The same money I'm dumping into the RX could easily go into turning a Mini into a V8 eater. Power to weight ratio would be sexy!
