WTF? Global CD-RW Problems? Is Service Pak 2 To Blame?
I thought it was just me, but for the past few months it's impossible to burn a CD. Sometimes the drive won't even read a CD-R.
So I slapped an external CD and it reads fine. But it still won't recognize a blank CD-R. So I found out that I wasn't the only one. Seems there's an army of people with weird software glitches and the primary culprit is Service Pak 2? At first I thought it was SONY. Then they announced shit wouldn't work with SP2. Then today I was listening to a major news show and they went on and on bitching about CD-RW problems! People used umpteen types of software but it was the same problem. Different companies. Didn't hear if it was a problem with MACs too. Then one expert theorized that it was some new type of copyright protection thingie that us consumers weren't warned about. My law reps were PISSED because they couldn't burn simple files and had spent 3 days looking for software. Same as real estate folks too. What's up with this? |
Haven't heard of any problems. But then again I'm still on 2000 :1orglaugh

never met anyone with that problem. Oh... one guy that did not know how to update his software or firmware.
|
funny that you say that. i have never had burner problems, dvd or cdr/rw until i nstalled that fucking thing. now i cant burn anything on this rig!

So I checked other boards with other manufacturers and they were having troubles. Burner software wasn't the prob. Firmware wasn't the prob. Only thing that works is using a system without the SP2. Works fine but you don't wanna go online with it. |

I'm still on win2k
i've not seen a good enough reason to upgrade to xp |
Hey, another suggestion just came in. Simple one too.
Partition and don't use XP with SP2. I hate partitioning but if need be. |
i love their software but i hate their ethics

This is exactly why I'll probably never install SP2.

I put the recommended security fixes on 2000. I can still burn CD's but it fucks up a lot now when before it never did.

It's the basic complaint everybody is having. With me, it's a DVD CD-RW. Reads DVDs like a charm. Suddenly won't read or write CDs no matter what files are on them. Added an external CD and it reads them fine but won't recognize a blank CD-R when writing. Some people have a problem where they can read a DVD but can't read or write anything CD. We tried all the CD burning software. Soon as someone finds one that works about a week or two later that software is kaputzki. |
Let's keep this thread alive for a while as i'm pretty sure lots of guys are having problems
|
people still burn stuff to CD-Rs instead of DVD-Rs ?
|
same problem on one of my notebooks recently.
|
I've got SP2 with all the updates installed.
NO problems with CD R/W here. -Dino |
I have a fairly new Sony DVD burner.. I instaleld the latest security updates (XP, non-SP2), and am now growing an excellent collection of DVD coasters..
I can't burn anything and have it be readable. I haven't tried CDs - but I've probably ruined 10 DVD disks in the past week, where I never had a bad disk in the two months since I bought the burner. |

Join the club Fusionx. SONY is one of the companies we're trying to troubleshoot. I like Toshiba products. Rarely have a problem with them. One of my systems is a SONY and it's a pain. Updated all software to the max and still the same problem. On duplicate Sony's we uninstalled then reinstalled Windows XP without the new SP2. CD read and burned fine. It's got to be the updates somewhere. Didn't know DVD burning was a problem. |

If you would have listed your DVD burner's model and firmware version. and your PC setup along with your burning software make and version you may of had a shot at getting some help. But from you replays to me I am surprised you can even turn on your PC. So just go ahead and tell me to die again that will solve it I am sure. |
