Tipping the valet & concierge ???
so, when staying at one of those nice hotels where u drive up to the front & they valet your car, (and u just call downstairs to have your car waiting out front when u want to leave)...how much is "customary" to tip for the valet ?
do you tip the guy that opens the door for you when you drop your car off? what about the dude that has your car waiting when you come downstairs and opens the door for you and hands you your keys? do u tip him too ? and lastly, the concierge...these guys always want to carry your bags up to the room. and when you check out you just say "can i get someoen up here to get my bags"...what is customary to tip him? sorry, all this is new to me...i've been used to staying in Holiday Inn ! lol :) |

As for the concierge, I am assuming the baggage guy and not the desk person who could make reservations for you, is what your asking about. 5-10 on arrival, plus 1-2 per bag. |
For valet I just give em whatever singles I have on me, sometimes they get lucky, other times not so much :2 cents:
I always carry my own damn bags (they have wheels on em!) so I never care about that, but I would do the same thing probably. |
Normally I don't tip when I drop my car off (maybe I'm cheap?). I usually tip 5 bucks when they bring me my car. I don't usually tip doormen for opening the door for me. I can open my own freakin' door. The guy who carries my bags to/from my room usually gets about 5 bucks, but that's with only 1 suitcase and a gown.

Parking guy knows ya stiffed him and has your car after the fact. Guy bringing it to you is delivering your car with hopes of a tip. |

yea, you're usually paying $200+ a night at places like that...and most of them DON'T allow you to park your own car...you would think that would be enough that you shouldn't have to tip the valet

I seem to remember reading a story a while ago about those guys making pretty damn good money from tips.. so don't feel bad about tipping low :winkwink:

For most of you not in the know..........the "tips" are sometimes put into a "pot" and divided up equally between the drivers at the end of the shift, like waiters do in restruants. However.............and this is big however........whoever has "control" of that parking program, like the owner of the operation, he quiet often takes hafl the money for the night right off the top and then the balance is divided among the attendants. So just cause the guy gets your car into a parking spot cleanly and back to you quickly and you give him a ten spot, he probably aint gonna see but two or three of that ten.

While working corporate and filling out expense reports, I tipped to what the company would reimburse. I do tip well if I am ever going to be a repeat customer (insurance). But, if I am driving a rental car and paying hotel fees that no one will remember me, I am a poor tipper. Let the establishment pay their workers more. I am not that way with restaurant workers; good service should always receive a good tip unless it really sucked. :) |
