LCD monitors (dead pixels)

Do any of you continue to use your monitor even if you have a dead pixel? Or does it really depend on the placement. I'm contemplating sending mine back because of the placement, since I surf and play games, a lot of dark and graphics and such bring out the pixel and it's bothersome. Anyways, would love to hear your feelings.

You may be disappointed to discover that a certain number of dead pixels are actually acceptable and not sufficient grounds for return.

I remember when I bought my first laptop, and it had a dead (bright blue) pixel in the middle of the screen, the shop would not take it back because they were allowed 5 bad pixels before it was considered 'defective'.

Needless to say, I had them open up the box and show me the running screen for the next laptop I bought before accepting it - we had to go through 5 laptops before we found one which did not have a dead pixel. The sales guy was sweating with every new box we opened.

Just like 'bubble memory' (that's not being nostalgic about booty) - a certain number of defective elements are considered normal.

If you do try and return your item, please let us know how you make out.

It's very fine.

I bought it 15 months ago after reading recommendation on GFY.
Nowadays i think there is already a new model from Samsung though.

YES! I've been told (at CompUSA) that "A bad 9x9 pixel grid was the industry standard, and we won't do returns on anything less" at which point I had a serious 'Come to Jesus' with the clerk over the fact that since the floor model, and the picture in the ad both showed 'perfect' displays - and that since there was no mention or sign stating this 'industry standard policy' - but in fact a big sign describing their '30 Day satisfaction guarantee' that they would indeed furnish me with a laptop that had a 'perfect' screen - several opened boxes and laptop startups later, I left satisfied with my 'perfect' laptop...

i have a almost undetectable line in one of my montitors

it's not enough to justify buying another right now

It's funny how these shops can have 'complete satisfaction guaranteed' for x number of days, but the bad pixel issue is one which is actively excluded - I'm sure they would accept any number of other 'reasons' for honoring their return policy but being so touchy about the pixel issues suggests that managing consumer expectations on this issue is a high priority with huge potential financial consequences.

I agree that they should proactively inform the consumer what is 'acceptable defect' - and not in font size .0001

I have a dead pixel on my LCD in the office. I barely notice it. I only found it now again after seeing this thread.

I've had my dell LCD for a few years now and havent had any problems with it

dcortez 12-16-2004 01:43 PM

BTW - even after having forced my sales rep to go through 5 laptops before finding one without a broken pixel, two weeks after I brought the PC home, it developed a burnt pixel.

I don't have the heart (more likely courage) to take it back.

Those are aperture grille lines-- Those are standard for some flat-screen monitors. I used to have a Dell monitor that had 2 of those aperture grille lines. :(

Me too only it wasn't a dell it was a sony trinitron with the dell name. Had the same thing. The thing cost me almost 2k so I was a bit "putt off" by this normal line, but hey you get used to it.

blazin 12-16-2004 02:36 PM

I believe I can take mine back for as much as 1 dead pixel...

I actually got it insurance for 5 years against any defects when I bought it.

I had the same problem with a Toshiba laptop I bought from compusa. Dead pixels right out of the box. They didn't want to replace it but I told them that they could either refund my money and I'd take my business elsewhere or provide a replacement. 10 minutes later I was walking out of the store with a new laptop.

Vitasoy 12-16-2004 03:48 PM

If it's really noticable, like in the center. I'd get a new one. My NEC has no dead pixels :)
