Kick Ass DataCenter! (pics)

We've recently moved all of our servers to a more local DataCenter in Orlando, FL. It's only about an hour away from us in Tampa, and my Mainstream design/hosting clients seem to like the idea of a "local" datacenter more than one in Texas, Atlanta or somewhere else.

The company is Marlin Web Hosting, http://www.marlinwebhosting.com.

So, AAA_Ryan and I went to tour the facility on Tuesday. I must say, we were VERY impressed! All in all, the facility was 2 HUGE buildings ( 225,000 sq/ft total )of Class A office space ,Datacenter, Call center and logistics warehouse. There was even TV studios built into this thing. The NOC looked like the pictures I see of Central Command at MacDill AirForce base here in Tampa.

I met with Roy, the owner of the company who is an actual Billionaire, Shane P. (formerly the president of Candid Hosting) and Danny (formerly of Shaw Internet) who are running Marlins hosting operations. I also got to meet their IT manager and several of their Network engineers. They all seem to be top notch guys very proud of the facility (Bragging about their connection speeds and fingerprint access to rooms like James Bond. lol)

Here are some photos I took while there:

Rows and rows of racks (Looks a lot cleaner than any other DataCenter I have toured):

I'm waiting for more pics from Ryans Camera. I'll post those when we have em online.

Thanks Shane and Danny! I appreciate the tour and the personal service!

Reminds me of a hospital.
Very nice.

My thoughts exactly. The other data centers I was in had the wires coming from the ceiling. This one had raised floors that looked to be about 2-3 feet high and I'm guessing their wire was run under that.

RyanL 12-16-2004 09:27 AM

Their data center was definatly kick ass! I worked at
both Adobe & SGI for several years, so it takes a lot too
impress me when it comes to data centers.

Shane and the rest of the crew at Marlin are great people.

Anyone looking for hosting should definitely check them out.

:thumbsup

For the time being, I believe they have some other tower racks coming specifically for those customers:-)

floridaT 12-16-2004 10:45 AM

I have toured this facility as well. It is amazing. We picked up six servers there last week. Great facility with a top notch staff. They had us set up and online very fast and everything was done perfect. Shane and Danny it was great to see you guys down here in Miami Last weekend.

Danny_C 12-16-2004 11:23 AM

Thanks Sharky and Ryan! It was great having you here. And to all the people who have posted so far, thanks for the kind words. If anyone else would like to come tour the facility and enjoy the company of Shane and me, you?re always welcome!

The facility is definitely unbelievable. The owner spared no expense when he built the 225,000 sq. ft. facility. He decided to lay his own private 2 mile sonic ring around the property with dual fiber connections to each carrier, and the data center has full redundant power, redundant climate control, multiple fiber entry points per carrier, all state of the art hardware, and Inergen fire suppression. And of course, you can see a picture of our NOC above.

We currently offer colocation starting at $25, half racks with 3 Mbps for $450, dedicated servers starting at $85, and shared hosting starting at $7.95. We also offer streaming video services for both live streaming and video on demand for you video streaming guys. These services are on load balanced servers with massive data storage arrays. If you want to see a sample from one of our streaming customers, check out mms://mg0.c1n.com/marlinshopping/0r3y9b.wmv

On top of all that, our facility also houses a full logistics operation for shipping/receiving (contact me, sex toy people and video guys? you know who you are), a state of the art call center (customer satisfaction for membership signups?), and video production studio.

If you want the ?GFY Special Treatment?, contact either Shane or myself at [email protected] / [email protected] or send an ICQ/phone call.

One last thing ? If you?re going to be in Vegas, stop by our booth and visit us!

Magg 12-16-2004 11:55 AM

Running wires UNDER the raised flooring is actually a very bad idea.

You want cables to be run on top, away from water and other problems which will accumulate under the flooring.
How do you suppose you'll go out and find faulty wiring? Lift out each and every floorboard?

Wiring is run in baskets about six inches above the floor.

Roy's quite an amazement from what I've heard previously. And he's definitely got the money to support his enterprises in the most top notch ways.

KK, you have no idea. I was excited just to meet with him. He's actually a pretty nice guy. His office was huge, and filled with photos of him with different presidents and others. He even had copies of checks that he received from the IRS for somewhere around $70,000,000 hanging on the wall !

Raven 12-16-2004 12:16 PM

Danny is awesome no matter where he is...his client support is unmatched....

The only other data center I've seen is UUNET in Atlanta....and I thought they were awesome....

Nice place you got there, Marlin Hosting....:)

JUSTB 12-16-2004 12:30 PM

Congrats to Shane and Danny. It really is a nice facility. I toured it a couple years ago and it is HUGE!

Cyndalie 12-16-2004 01:06 PM

Congrats Danny! I know you put alot into this project and company and have been working hard. I hope it really pays off for you! If anyone knows what webmasters need and has ethics in mind, it's you. Let's get together soon!

Doesn't surprise me one bit, given his past successes :)

Sharky the pics look great. Danny has been telling me about this datacenter for sometime now. It is awesome to finally see what it looks like:)

Congrats to both parties!

Sharky 12-17-2004 07:25 AM

Thanks Tonda!

Danny wasn't pulling your leg. He ended up in a VERY good place.

very nice and very clean :thumbsup

SinisterStudios 12-17-2004 09:58 AM

I guess most people on here havent seen too many true tier 1 datacenters, I have been in most of the datacenters in the NJ/NY area and the bigger guys always have a clean well kept datacenter. But if your looking for the best datacenter you need to look into the equinix datacenters, now they do it right. They look like you stepped onto the deck of the starship enterprise. We host in the NJ, and san jose centers and you just cant beat the carrier nuetral approch. Just my :2 cents:
