Did you always get an orange in your x-mas stockings too?

Every single year, no matter how many times I'd let it sit and go rotten... I'd still get an orange in my stocking the next year.

One thing that's for sure... I'll never put my child through that... NO MORE ORANGES!

wes 12-14-2004 08:11 PM

No, its a tradition.

It started when oranges were real expensive and considered quite the treat. Kids would get them in their stockings and be thrilled because it wasn't very often that they got to sink their teeth into a nice juicy orange.

Santa at my dads always brought oranges and nuts. We never liked nuts but of course my dad loved them. Sneaky bastard.

XxXotic 12-14-2004 09:10 PM

not that I recall

Babagirls 12-14-2004 09:11 PM

Smurfette 12-14-2004 09:16 PM

Yep always got one and now I do it with my kids, after the chocolate I use to eat the orange next. I remember my nan telling me the stories of the oranges being expensive and a real treat to get.

Smurfette

Holly 12-14-2004 09:21 PM

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-15-2004 02:33 AM

my parents were to cheap to even get me a stocking let alone an orange in it... but my grandma did.. and i kept throwing it away while saying this to her

"throw this thing away, never know what those crazy old people put in there... just like apples on halloween, could bite into it and get a needle or something!"

and she would always get mad...

Makingcoin 12-15-2004 02:36 AM

Yes, every single Christmas without fail there would be a couple of mandarins in my stocking. :thumbsup

Keev 12-15-2004 02:40 AM

we always got tangerines... i loved them lol

Xenthan 12-15-2004 02:45 AM

This tradition can be traced to the "depression"...maybe before I'm not sure.
But it has to do with giving that which someone doesn't see too often.
A fresh Orange...or Tangerine.was a treamendous treat back in the day when "Santa Cluase " was adopted by the USA from the Netherlands' "Sinter Clause"(sp)
In "New York"(new Amsterdam).
Think of the TRADITION...you surely do NOT hang STOCKINGS over a FIREPLACE in S.Cal.
My goodness...how deprived you must be to not know the joy of putting on "fireplace roasted socks"over cold feet in the middle of a blizzard.
I Love the snow!

Sarah_Jayne 12-15-2004 04:09 AM

yes and I never ate it so every year I would have to remember to get rid of it before it started to rot.

blazin 12-15-2004 05:02 AM

Yep, I used to get oranges - interesting to find out where the tradition came from
