Opensource TGP Software?
 

I'm working on new TGP site software. As an opensource zealot it occurs to me to give away this program and it's underlying code for free. If there are any TGP site webmasters here (I'm new to the forum), what do you think of this? What programs are you using now? What would make you switch?

I'm still not quite sold on giving it away for free because the reason I've written this software in the first place was to run my own TGP to make money. If I open the code to the public, then I will be spending a lot more time supporting/developing it versus running my own. So I will need some sort of new income. If you guys have some ideas on how this could be achieved then I could be easily convinced to open this project.

Anyhow, this is just a thought, probably a crazy one at that... thanks.

Do what the rest of the world is doing when they offer open source software. Software is free, support is paid.

It's all in PHP currently.

Right now it does many of the things http://www.freehostedgalleries.com/ does for you, except that it also has a content management system built in so you can easily add galleries from sponsors. Builtin thumbnail chooser (similar to Autogallery SQL but much better).

A friend suggested that some damn easy and simple TGP software is desperately needed and I thought it sounded like an interesting challenge. I have been mainly working on the backend(read: admin areas), to find out what I can automate, and how much.

Interesting, the spirit of open source in the adult community. Wonder if it will work, seems like true open source projects get alot of help from other programmers that use the results. But like you say the ultimate goal of tgp is to make money, so would anyone really help you improve it for free or just skip of with the source and make it their own?

Sounds like an excellent idea. I think a modular type code base would be best. This way new functionality can be added easily.

It depends how you craft the license. Sometimes you get paid back through the innovations of others by sharing your innovation with them first. Sometimes the value of INFORMATION grows exponentially when it is shared. That's the business philosophy behind http://justtraffic.blogspot.com

Opensource software for adult is absolutely absurd. Anyone in the business who even considers it is an idiot.

Lot's of ways to make money from an open source model. Give away the basic version but upsell to a full version. Ask for a trade to your tgp in the free version and make money off the traffic. Offer custom versions for a fee. Offer custom programming services on the admin page. Offer program upsells on the admin (iframed to rotate the offers). I can think of a few more but you get the picture.
