So I finally watched HERO last night.

Awesome fucking flick.

Simplay amazing. The writing superb, the acting excellent, the action flawless and the colors stunning.

Haven't seen it?

Do so...now.

ironlung 12-13-2004 10:11 AM

is that the movie with dustin hoffman, i think ive seen parts but not the whole thing

chodadog 12-13-2004 10:12 AM

I loved it. The trailers were very vague. I was under the impression it was just going to be a bunch of senseless violence. The plot was great. Looking forward to house of flying daggers! A friend of mine has it on DVD, but i haven't bothered to go and watch it just yet.

Yeah that looks like another great flick..and I now have added another star to my stalking list...
Ziyi Zhang

Sarah_Jayne 12-13-2004 10:19 AM

i loved it too - especially the use of colours. THough, the water dripping scene at the front of the movie almost made me have to get up and go to the loo which I try never to do in cinemas.

I have been stalking her since that movie with Jackie Chan... Red Dragon was it? :Graucho

And yeah Hero is one of my all time faves. I got a copy from Decatur Swapmeet before it was even in the theater and I have watched it a bunch of times. It was one of the things that got me inspired to learn Chinese and I can actually understand some of it now believe it or not as they speak slow enough. :)

Vitasoy 12-13-2004 10:24 AM

Yep I thought it was great, also check out his older movies that he made in HK/China... :)

TheDoc 12-13-2004 10:25 AM

Hero, best movie I have seen all year...

Damn is "House of The Flying daggers" out yet? I will be checking that out definitely.

edit: ok it opened Dec 3 east Coast anyway, hopefully here too.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/20...2214579205.jpg

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese film star Zhang Ziyi of the Oscar nominated 'House of Flying Daggers' has been invited to attend the Oscars next February.

Zhang Ziyi's 'House of Flying Daggers' has been nominated in the Best Foreign Film category for the 77th Academy Awards.

The multi-award winning actress will also attend this year's Golden Globe Awards, which has forced her to delay the release of her film 'Jasmine Women'.

Zhang Ziyi is growing in popularity in the US through box office success of 'Daggers' and the martial arts epic 'Hero'.

She is also hard at work on the drama 'Memoirs of a Geisha' with Hollywood heavyweight producer Steven Spielberg.

The star will appear on the red carpet alone, as the film's director Zhang Yimou will be busy with his new film 'Qian Li Zou Dan Ji'.

That's cool...it seems like a hard language to learn tho'.

Rob 12-13-2004 10:45 AM

I love how they changed the colors of the costumes to match the mood of the story being told. I absolutely loved that movie!

A lot of people slammed it because they said it wasn't what they expected. I tell them to not expect anything and they'll never be let down.

Hero is an awesome movie and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommmend it. Just don't set yourself up for some massive ass kicking, Jet-li vs. the entire Chinese army bullshit that the previews paint it out to be. :2 cents:

Sarah_Jayne 12-13-2004 10:46 AM

The guys I was with were much bigger fans of Maggie Cheung (the older woman in the film) and I agree. She is fantastic in many movies.

Yeah amazing how they used color to even propel the story..like the fighting scene in the yellow leaves.

It's very hard, I am about the bottom of my class because of all the memorization. :1orglaugh

But if you are at all interested from a designer/Webmaster point of view.. predictions are for 80% of web content to be written in Mandarin within 5 years because of the exploding net population over there.... Classes start at UNLV (CHI 113) week of Jan 18 Tues and Thurs 5:30PM-6:45PM.

Probably one of the best movies I have seen this year. Its a must own on DVD imho.
Some of the scenes in that movie had such an amazing feel to them also, the fight in the forest where the colors changed like mad and the leaves twirled like fast and the furious was simply Spectacular. Cant say enough about how great this film was.

Another really good flic I just saw was Finding Neverland, another must see movie with an awesome performance from the legendary Johnny Depp

:thumbsup

uno 12-13-2004 11:32 AM

I liked it way better than crouching tiger, but there were still too much walking on water type things.

Me I just prefer subtitles on all my foreign films. I read fast so it doesn't bother me.

I just love to hear the original voices...plus there is alot of imagery in this film so you're not always having to read.

Now regarding the surround sound..I didn't check it out without the subtitles so I wouldn't know.

Sarah_Jayne 12-13-2004 01:12 PM

never watched dubbed versions they are evil to the actors

VeriSexy 12-13-2004 01:14 PM

All Under Heaven :thumbsup

SykkBoy 12-13-2004 01:17 PM

loved the movie

I always watch subtitled whenever possible...dubbing takes away the mood of the movie for me....

BVF 12-13-2004 01:32 PM

I loved the movie. What was good is that after awhile, I forgot that it was in chinese. If you can read fast enough to just glance to the subtitles, your brain will be tricked into thinking that they're speaking english.

if a subtitled movie is good enough that always happens. It is why I hate dubbing.

Great Movie. The Arrow scene was my favorite part. It was so fake but so cool. :thumbsup

iFliPcEss 12-13-2004 03:35 PM

the only thing i hate about such of movie, is when i have to read the subtitle, i had a far sighted syndrome, thats why its hard for me to read those lines

cayne 12-13-2004 03:59 PM

Watched it a few days ago. (For the 2nd time) Really a special film, not the average bullshit.

fusionx 12-13-2004 04:16 PM

There's a scene where Jet Li and the chick are on top of a flat hill (like a butte, sort of), and the cinematography is simply outstanding. I seem to remember flowing robes. I want to get a print made from that scene. I haven't tried to extract it - is it possible to pull a frame from a DVD in high enough quality to make it worthwhile?
