How long does it take to fully recover from smoking?

Say someone has been smoking for about 5-6 years and quit now. How long would it take for them to fully recover? If they ever fully recover that is? And is there a chance of that person ever running a marathon? lol

I quit for 3 years after smoking for 8 and I never fully recovered, still didn thave lung capacity I once had. Then I started again, just quit werkin on 4 months now, I have never seen so much brown/green shit come out my lungs, and they itch, yeah they itch WAY down in the mother fookers.

Quit NOW, and it wont be so bad:2 cents:

Babagirls 12-12-2004 11:36 PM

its never too late to quit. just quit.

thats a good question, I know if you're young (>35) you can fully recover.. but I dont know how long it takes. I would assume 5 years or so?

lil2rich4u2 12-12-2004 11:37 PM

i dont think anyone really knows, but i heard a long time ago that for every 10yrs you smoked, it takes 7yrs to fully clean out.

was not from a medical source, just hear-say

If you mean with recover from smoking, that your lungs are clean again, that can take between 10-15 years after quit smoking

BV 12-12-2004 11:39 PM

it only takes a few weeks for your lungs to clear out,

oh and if they itch too badly, reach down your throat with a coat hanger :2 cents: :1orglaugh

HammerTime33 12-12-2004 11:44 PM

It aint funny, I told a doctor and he said BS, it was in my mids becasue the lungs dont have nerves that feel, but Im tellin ya they itch.
the First time I quit my lungs were cleared out in 5 to 6 weeks, and I mean mucus not totally recovered. This time after smoking for only one year, it has been 4 months of hell with my lungs clearing.

Just me and my :2 cents:

Ohhh... and the coat hanger was already thought of, so was a wire brush. Doc says its all in my mind, I tell em it is mind over matter, if you dont have a mind it dont matter.

There is no complete recovery for a long term smokers body. Its basically fucked.

Every cigarette releases something like 4 Quadrillion free radicals into the body.

evildick 12-12-2004 11:45 PM

Here's some info on it:

http://www.webhealthcentre.com/gener...g.asp#benefits

After 20 min Blood Pressure & Pulse rate return to normal.
After 8 hrs Oxygen levels in the blood returns to normal. Chances of heart attack starts falling.
After 24 hrs Carbon monoxide is eliminated from the body. Lungs clear out mucus and other debris.
After 48 hrs Nicotine no longer detectable in the body. Ability to taste and smell is improved.
After 72 hrs Breathing becomes easier as bronchial tubes relax. Energy level increases.
After 2 - 21 weeks Circulation improves throughout the body.
After 3 - 9 months Breathing problems such as coughing, shortness of breath & wheezing decrease. Overall lung function increases by 5 - 10%
After 5 yrs Risk of heart attack falls to about half of that of a smoker.
After 10 yrs Risk of lung cancer falls to about half of that of a smoker. Risk of heart attack falls to about the same as non - smokers.

It kills me when I see teens smoking. I just want to go up to them and yank the cigs out of there mouths and crush them on the ground and tell them do you even have a clue how each cigarette puts hundreds of toxic poisons permenantly into your body!!!

I smoked for 13 years and stopped a month ago. To be honest after the initial two days of nightmare it's been fine.

And don't ever say you want to go and stop other people smoking - I smoked for a long time and I know why they do it. Yes it's stupid, but it's not for anyone else to go and tell them off for it, or tell them whats right and wrong. They know its no good for them. Every smoker does.

I live in England, and what i find wonderfully ironic about America the few times I have been is that in a huge amount of places you can't smoke, and yet the pollution hangs thick in the air because of the amount of big truck/jeep things Americans drive. American cars are in general so much larger than english cars, with bigger engines, consuming more fuel (which is also cheaper than in the uk), and thus pumping out more junk.

Don't worry about the kids smoking, try not filling their lungs with pollutants from your SUVs.
