Help: b/w protection in a paysite
 

I just fucked by a guy who joins my site for trial membership for $4.95 and the first day he became a member, he sucked me 4.6gigs (it costs me $13.8) and then he canceled his membership with a reason that my content is not big enough! I can't imagine if i get this kind of member daily.

Somebody please advise some software that can limit the transfer rate. (eg, if the member d/l over 100megs in one day, it returns error to members and stop transfering)....

PS. He used some program like teleport, but it is easily faked the USER_AGENT so browser filtering technique can not stop him.

Get rid of the trial

I had the htaccess to prevent this sort of thing a while back... I had to remove it almost straight away, as I was informed that it killed 2 different servers within 24 hours. Not a good idea.

By the way, I don't see why he shouldn't be doing this. If you've promised him something like 5,000 mb of videos, he's payed for his membership, and downloaded it all. It's only honest, it's not nice but if he's not violated the t&c then he's done nothing wrong.

By using a program like Bandwidth Valve you may have to alter your terms and conditions, some members find that they can only download 500mb per day - especially if it's an movie site - you'll have pissed off members on your hands.

I wonder whether the solution is just to have streaming content, not to allow members to actually download movies. That in itself wouldn't be popular with members, but with faster connections you have to do that, or accept that sometimes trials will be exploited in that way.

Or dont have trials. Trials suck ass.

I can't believe that I'm going to say this, but I agree with Gary http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif Trials suck! Especially if your just starting out, if $13 in bandwidth has got you worried then get rid of the trial!

fuckers like that sux!! normally they use something like webcopier to download your entire members with a button click. try adding this to your .htaccess

1) Start by decreasing your expenses (decreasing your bandwidth cost).
2) There is software out there that allows you to limit how many GB/MB a user can download per second/minute/hour/day/week, this might be that you need.
