text messaging - why?

just call me already. i don't understand why people want to use their awkward phones to send out text messages, when it iwas built for talking. annoyin imo.

Rantan 12-12-2004 06:54 PM

asians do it..hop on the band wagon

com 12-12-2004 06:54 PM

its better to txt when in the middle of a conference or business meeting

polish_aristocrat 12-12-2004 06:56 PM

Sometimes sending an SMS is more convenient.

SMS'es are short and to the point and won't disturb you, when you are working, having sex, having bed mood, etc.

:thumbsup

n3in 12-12-2004 06:58 PM

text msgs get on my nerves, talking on the phone is a lot quicker and easier, so just call

Rochard 12-12-2004 06:58 PM

Text messages are great for asking a question but don't want to get into a thirty minute discusion about other stuff.

Also, our servers have a text alert system - If anything goes wrong, I get a message.

jimmyf 12-12-2004 07:00 PM

fuck text messages i don't read' em just delete them

sean416 12-12-2004 07:03 PM

what is a "bed mood?"

fuzebox 12-12-2004 07:07 PM

I disagree, I have a few friends I text message constantly... Most of the time what we have to say isn't really worth a phone call, or one of us is occupied and can't talk but can glance at the phone.

I also know my way around the keypad so it's pretty fluid.

polish_aristocrat 12-12-2004 07:07 PM

I even prefer text messages.

F.e. when a friend sends me an SMS asking if I want to go out for a beer tonight, then I have a couple minutes to think about it... while when he calls me, then i might be in bad mood, so I might say "no" but then 1 hour later, iI change my mind, so then I look like an idiot if I call him and say I changed my mind.

That's like email - you answer when you have the time to do it and when you want to do it.

edited - same as parents when they call me and ask if I want to come for dinner on the weekend, while I am in the middle of 5 ICQ conversations...so I cannot really think about that...it's better to receive an SMS and reply in an hour

Babagirls 12-12-2004 07:13 PM

i used to use them alot back in the day. it was a great way to communicate while at work or if i was in a movie theater and plans with friends changed, then i would know right away.

i rarely ever use it now though. i think its more for the younger crowd.

You are in my age and already consider yourself old? :uhoh

WiredGuy 12-12-2004 07:16 PM

I never liked txt messaging, in fact, I removed the service from my cell phone plan.

when your buds talk for a minimum of 30 minutes, sometimes sending them an sms will get you a quick answer and you dont have to break your conversation.

Monique Niccole 12-12-2004 07:23 PM

I like text messaging. It's good for when you're busy or just don't feel like having a full-on conversation.

reynold 12-12-2004 07:38 PM

sometimes i don't answer sms message. i feel lazy to answer it especially if it's non-sense.

The Heron 12-12-2004 08:16 PM

I agree, I don't think I even bothered enabling it on my phone. Fuck that, i want to hear your sexy voice!

StuartD 12-12-2004 08:19 PM

the text messaging is great when at a convention.. say... in Vegas. It's so much cheaper and easier to text "where are you?" rather than make an international long distance phone call.

KRL 12-12-2004 08:21 PM

I do a lot of text messaging. Most people talk on the phone to long so texting exactly what you need to convey is quicker. And you don't have to play phone tag.

Rictor 12-12-2004 08:27 PM

I prefer ICQ or e-mail to a phone call because a phone call I have to answer right away and talk to the person. I assume you can let a text message sit there for a while, correct? So if you are doing something else, you can message them between what you are doing. Or if you're a teenager and watching tv, you can message your girlfriend during the commercials and shit...I could see myself using this when I was a kid.

it saves time wasted on small talk. my phone has a full keypad though.

colpanic 12-12-2004 08:29 PM

Most of the time I prefer text-ing to actually talking on the phone.

It's the equivalent of asking "why do people use ICQ, just call me".

Anytime minutes versus unlimited text mesasges. Plus I don't have to hear pointless convo. I go through about 200 text messages per week.

FreshChecks 12-12-2004 10:09 PM

I like the short and to the point also.

demented 12-12-2004 10:17 PM

I text everyday. You pretty much get used to it after a while. I would rather text, than talk on the phone anyday.

psyko514 12-12-2004 10:18 PM

back when Brat and I both had day jobs, we spent all day text messaging each other. since we've quit, we barely use it anymore.

rowan 12-12-2004 10:43 PM

I use text msgs when I'm not sure whether the other person is busy or awake, but texting back and forth like a conversation is kinda silly...

The carriers in AU charge up to 20-25c per SMS. They make millions each from all those tiny blips of network activity. It's a ripoff.

Heavy SMS users are also having problems with carpal tunnel syndrome from texting one handed. Phones do not have very ergonomic keyboards...

detoxed 12-12-2004 10:44 PM

hmm maybe because you cant talk in every setting without being a rude asshole, but you can quietly and discreetly send a text message without anyone noticing.

pxxx 12-12-2004 10:45 PM

I argue it both ways..

If you are paying 10 cents per message, and 10 cents per minute talking, then you are better off making the call.

If you have unlimited text messaging, then text your ass off.

SinBucks 12-12-2004 10:57 PM

I use em when I run out of cell minutes. $0.02/txt message is much cheaper than $0.35/min.

chodadog 12-12-2004 11:06 PM

Texting is huge down here in Australia and in the UK. It's bizarre. Mates of mine send and receive something like 30 or 40 messages per day. It's nuts. I don't use mobile/cellular phones, so obviously i don't text either.

agreed. i only have it because so many want to use it. for everyone that said it's easier than a long phone call - ever heard of email????

except with email you have a nice keyboard, unlimited, easily searchable archive, and a simple way to back up any digital text conversations you might have had.

long live text messaging lol. btw, this would have taken me 5 minutes to type out on a phone, vs 15 seconds on my laptop.

Baxter 12-12-2004 11:41 PM

ya i agree text messages are dumb.....i use nextell and if i want anyone i just beep there asses lol

you'd be surprised how quickly you can type on a cellphone once you get the hang of it.

i'm only speculating, but i'd say on a cellphone with a keypad, i could do at least 20 words per minute. and on my current cellphone which has a full QWERTY keyboard, i could probably do upwards of 35-40 WPM.

Odin88 12-13-2004 01:37 AM

I hate text messaging. I think people do it to save money? But I wouldn't know, I refuse to use it anyway, and if people insist on texting me in expectation of a text response (or me calling them) I just ignore their messages.

iFliPcEss 12-13-2004 01:38 AM

i do text a lot, to keep in touch, to inform my relatives friends etc. for simple reason, it is very convenient and quite cheap than the usuall fone call, well at least in my country,

what you do see, if you get a hat and wear it somewhat sideways, and buy a basketball jersey.. preferably red or white with clashing lettering.

and as you type back to your friends (if your typing to anyone at all), you gotta tilt your head to the side and kinda lean a bit.

makes you look super cool and gets all the chicks

Not even to say "It's fucking Fred!" ?

SMSing is hugely popular amongst teenagers especially outside the US and they are fast as hell, one thumb even. Useful if you are a grounded 13 yo girl. You can still arrange to meet your bf by the side window at 1AM. :)

It's very useful really.
I don't like talking to people. People keep on babbling about shit I don't want to hear. I can ask a question via SMS and get a short and to the point reply.
Also sms can be sent when the other person is unavailable to talk. Like My girl at work, I can send her a message "Bring me beer and pie bitch", and I don't have to listed to nagging and I get the product.

Ever hear of people who don't sit on computers all day? I know it's an unbelievable concept, but I don't have a single friend who are online, even once a day. However, everyone has a cellphone and have it handy all the time. :)

kowntafit 12-13-2004 01:46 AM

I use text heaps and so do my mates. Good luck calling someone when they are in a nightclub.
