It is free if you use one of the 15-20 approved sponsors. People like topbucks, hawgscash, etc. The companies pay them a small amount every time you submit a gallery using them as a sponsor.

As for them putting adds on your stuff, nope, nothing at all. Only catch is if you want to submit for free, you use the approved sponsors. Current list as of today is (it changes at times, some are added some are removed):
