My Audi A6 was almost stolen today...

I had a terrible time today & am feeling the need to vent a little, and to let you all hear the stress that I dealt with. Just got this 2001 A6 2.7t about three weeks ago....love the car...anyway... I am on the phone at 3:00 PM in my office in beautiful East Orange, NJ, I look out the window & I see my drivers side door wide open. It took a few seconds to register in my brain, but then I went flying out the door & running down a flight of stairs. I am about 10 feet from the car & the guy inside my car sees me & starts to run. I chased him out of my parking lot & he got into a waiting blue Nissan Quest & he was gone.

I got the plate number & instantly called the police with my description, hoping in desparation that they could do something, but I knew the damage had already been done. When I got back to my car, I almost started to cry. The drivers door handle was gone, the lock was gone, the ignition was gone, wires are hanging out of the steering column, & I am bumming.

This is where the story really starts to get good. It was pouring rain in NJ today & when the guy got the doors unlocked (without the Audi alarm going off, BTW) he also made all the windows go down. SO now I am waiting outside in the rain for the cops to show, and there is no way to put the windows up. I decide to call Audi roadside assistance for help. After about 1/2 hour on the phone with them, I was basically told that they cannot help me at all. They said that because this was the result of vandalism, that they will not do anything to help me. Dissapointed, I call AAA. They will send a tow truck, the only problem is, I cannot get the car into neutral, as the ignition is gone & the steering & auto trans are both locked. They finally tell me that the only thing that they can do for me is to call a locksmith & give me a $100.00 credit for the service. I say OK, but when the locksmith calls, he tells me that he cannot do anything with the car & that it has to go to a dealer for the ignition to be fixed.

By this time it is almost 6:00 PM & I know that I am running out of time. The cops show up, take the report, put the description of the getaway car on the wire, and tell me that if I leave the car overnight, that the thiefs will deffinetly come back to finish the job & steal it. I am freaking out, my 3 week old car is getting soaked & I am running out of options. I decide to call Paul Miller Audi in Parsippanny, NJ as I had my 2000 A6 Avant serviced there before the lease was up & it was returned. The service department was able to refer me to a towing company that might be able to help.

Another hour goes by & the towtruck driver gets there, he is somehow able to start the car with a screwdriver & at least gets it into neutral, but the steering is still dead, and the car will not stay on. He was able to get the windows up & with some pushing, we got it placed so that he could get it on the flatbed & bring it to the dealer.

Now I am waiting for the damage report but I know it ain't going to be cheap. What really bothered me about this whole ordeal, was the lack of help of any kind that I received from the Audi Roadside Assistance program. I cannot believe that they could not even come & try to tow it to the dealer for me, or put the windows up...totally lame. I was also incredibly surprised that the car was so easy to break into without the alarm going off. The tow truck driver showed me that basically you pop off the cover on the door lock & any key will turn the lock & the alarm off. Again totally lame!

After all this, I am left with the one interesting thing that the cop told me. "The thief's love the 2.7t because of the quattro & that it can out run an East Orange cop car on the Garden State Parkway!" HAHA....ughh.

Thats a shit story bro, the worst thing that I had happen to my car of that nature, was when I left it parked outside of my house in Brooklyn, in broad daylight during the summer for a couple of hours. When I came down, someone broke the passenger window and dented the pillar to steal my phone and my digital camera which was in an ipod carry pouch. I know its stupid to leave anything in plain sight in the car, and believe me, after that, I learned my lesson, but still, it was broad daylight, in a pretty decent neighborhood, and right outside my house.

Hope things work out for you though. Btw, you may want to look into completely disabling that door lock and just using the keyless entry, alot of people do it for aesthetics with a cover, but you may want to do it for safety reasons.

THX moe....at least the fucker didn't get my IPOD & sunglasses that were in the armrest.

Persius 12-07-2004 10:16 PM

i hope 2morrow you'll enjoy your day

MikeHawk 12-07-2004 10:18 PM

That is so crazy and so sorry to hear that... It would have made more sense to let them take it...call the rent a car place, have your insurance give you a brand new one...now you have a car that has been damaged, and has all kinds of bad memories.

Also your kids buddy, what if that guy turned around and stuck you with the screw driver? The car is not worth all that; we pay insurance not to have to deal with that kind of nonsense
.:2 cents:

pxxx 12-07-2004 10:20 PM

That has got to suck bro.

brand0n 12-07-2004 10:24 PM

THX Mike - You know, I totally wasn't thinking. It was like total adrenaline rush. The kid was like 16 & fast & there was no way I was gonna catch him, but something inside made me chase. I was screaming at him& when he got to the car, there were like 4 other guys in the van, so it really is a good thing that I didn't get him. The cops told me that they have the young kids actually do the break-ins, so if they get caught, they are out in an hour or two with a date for kiddiecourt. ANyway, thanks for the kind words. Hoping to rage with you & Mr. SPikes in Vegas. We will be there from the 4th to the 10th.

dubious media 12-07-2004 11:23 PM

anyone else have bad audi experiences?

LiveDose 12-07-2004 11:30 PM

I love Audis but I would never buy one again because of their arrogant roadside assistance clowns.

In 97 I bought a new A4 and the following month it died on I85 in Virginia because of a faulty alternator.

Every step of the way dealing with these cocksuckers was a nightmare.

BuckLover 12-07-2004 11:31 PM

lunchbox 12-08-2004 12:45 AM

You should of equipped it with a pager alarm..ive got an older audi (the 90 model) and had it added anyways cuz of all the work im having done to the car. As soon as the glass shatters, or metal makes contact with the glass (getting in with a slimjim), the alarm pages you. At the very least it would of warned you and maybe he wouldnt of done all the damage he did. Those things should come stock on any car..real useful.

PersianKitty 12-08-2004 12:53 AM

That's what insurance is for.....

No one thought to go get a tarp or two to cover until you could get it towed?

Yesterday when leaving the grocery store , I noticed two women walking from a newer Mercedes into the store. The driver's door on the car was wide open. LV purse sitting on the seat. I turned around and yelled for them but of course they didn't hear me. My son's GF went inside after them while I watched the car.

Funny thing.. when the woman came out she was more worried about her LV than the car. She commented to my son's GF that maybe that was how her other car was stolen from some other grocery store parking lot a few weeks earlier.

I'm totally with you on this. A car like that, you better believe I would have complete coverage. I would probably still go chase after it just because I don't like being ripped off, but I wouldn't sweat the damage since it's covered. :2 cents:

No shit. I would think SOMEONE could go to the auto parts store down the street and get a car cover. If nothing else, that would obscure the type of car underneath.

I got pissed just by reading all that :(

good luck

Just a quick note of thanks & respeck for all of you who read through my long post last night & had some kind words or sympathy for the shit day that I had. To those of you who thought I was bragging about owning an Audi.....Fuck Off & go back to high school. If I wanted to brag I would have written about my Bentley, which is the garage for winter storage....hahahaha

Anyway, of course I am totally insured, but this will still end up costing me at least 1000.00 ( My Deductable) plus a rental car & all the aggrivation & lost work time. SO while this was kind of a sob story, a thousand bucks is still a thousand bucks!

Also, I wanted to offer up a couple of AVN passes for Las Vegas in January. We have a booth & some extra customer badges, that are yours for the asking....hit my ICQ @ 166546996 if you are interested.
