A friend got tagged with no insurance and just asked me if you can buy insurance that starts coverage a couple days prior to your purchase of it.

Just shop around for a cooperative agent. It might take a few calls but you'll find one.

Only a shady insurance company will pre-date the policy, and you will have to pay cash . . . . but it can be done

The crooked insurance broker would have to be pretty stupid. Your friend already got busted, is he going to go to court and say that he forgot to tell the cop about his insurance?

I assume by tagged you mean he got pulled over. An accident would be a different case.
