members - do they watch more wmv's or mpgs?

What do your members watch more? interestingly some of our paysites have members that watch more mpg's than wmv's and others is the exact opposite. Seems interesting to know why certain niches like certain video formats. What is your thought on this?

BV 12-05-2004 02:50 PM

I think they watch what they like the most, doesn't really matter what format it is if they have windows media player associated with .mpg and .wmv files. I think this would be 95% or higher of everyone.

NaughtyAlysha 12-05-2004 02:58 PM

Here are some recent stats:
wmv 53,206,362,269 bytes 60.22% 13,631 accesses
mpg 18,414,253,201 bytes 20.84% 1,781 accesses

And I post all of my videos in mpeg and wmv formats.

Nima 12-05-2004 03:00 PM

yea but it seems for some of our sites they like mpg's more than wmv's and others they like wmv's more... I mean how could that be explained?

emthree 12-05-2004 03:07 PM

It would depend on how the types are offered to the surfer. WMV would probably come out ontop in most cases though.

Varies a LOT from user to user. hard to say which is used more

xclusive 12-05-2004 03:58 PM

Interesting question I plan on offering everything in both formats...

latinasojourn 12-05-2004 04:37 PM

wmv gives better image quality than mpg for a given file size.

problem is not everyone has or wants to use WMP so mpg is a more "universal" format.

so i give mpg

Kicker 12-05-2004 05:08 PM

wmv:thumbsup

The Apprentice 12-05-2004 05:46 PM

Bullshit, to all you WMV people.

That's half true- if they gave us more MPG's, we'd watch more of them... Get it?

Are you forgetting the MAC users out there?
Oh that's right, MAC users only account to %10 of the market share...

I heard America's wealthiest, accounts for 10% of the population.

dicknixon 12-05-2004 05:48 PM

MAC users can play WMV now.

SGS 12-05-2004 05:52 PM

We offer both but WMV is now much more popular with our members.

Of course the top 10% of America is the "most wealthy" 10%.

Change the variable.

We've all heard it before, you know what the fuck saying.

basschick 12-05-2004 08:58 PM

i remember oystein said wmv was taking over, and a lot of other people are telling me the same - but one of the sites 75% are watching mpg when presented with both formats.

i thought this was a pretty relevant question because a lot of people are planning to stop offering mpgs due to the many times they've been told no surfers watch them anymore. i guess my surfers didn't know that ;-)

chaze 12-05-2004 08:59 PM

I think Quicktime quality is far beyond windows media.

Indeed, it is. that's why I'm saying these people are smoking crack.

But I can see why wmv's would be popular with the average Joe.

Agent White 12-06-2004 12:58 AM

Quicktime can't touch WMV.

If you want to know what WMV can really do, download this clip from my server. 7:23 and 45.9 megs, making it about 2.08 megs per 20 second clip.... gallery level encoding.

I encoded it myself using a program I wrote to deal directly with the encoder.

All the encoding software currently out for WMV is garbage so I wrote my own. There's options and features that simply can't be set even with Windows Media Encoder itself.

Remember, this is encoded at gallery level, 2 megs for every 20 seconds. Check it out.

I used a DVD as the source, as that will show the greatest loss.

Video is 720x480, with stereo sound at 48K.

I am confident in saying it'll beat Xvid, DivX, Quicktime or any other codec you can think of for quality to bitrate. Anyone who thinks otherwise, I'd be glad to challenge to a taste test :)

Edit: please right click, save as... It'll make browsing around the keyframes a lot faster.

well fuck shitty mpg's.. we want .mov's!

alias 12-06-2004 01:01 AM

.WMV is easy to fullscreen, .mov is often not able to be set fullscreen.. .

who fucking cares since MAC peep can play WMVs

alias 12-06-2004 01:10 AM

MAC users are fags, so unless you are in the gay market don't sweat it :winkwink:

Agent White 12-06-2004 02:12 AM

I think if people could really use WMV to its full potential, everyone would be using it... for everything.

At this point though, there are still some transcoding bugs on the encoder side and all the attempts at making a decent interface to encode with have been really half assed.

Vegas and Premiere have really poor WMV encoding setups, and even Windows Media Encoder doesn't give you all the goods.

I personally don't like wmv beacuse they play very sloow and often freeze....Epsecially if you have sth like celeron 400 and 128 ram :)..but many poeple =surfers still have 'old' pcs...
mpg is also a standard and every video player can play it. :)

fischi 12-06-2004 03:22 AM

forward, rewind, pause, slow motion.
all this in a smooth manner.
wmv lacks that, mov not.

Not running smoothly here. Framerate approxx. 1fps. :(

For quality vs. size, look at some movie-trailers
from Apple

Dirty-Dough 12-06-2004 05:18 AM

Depends on how you offer it..

Say you have one chunk mpeg and a cut up version of it in WMV or other way around.. that will change some numbers...

Screaming 12-06-2004 07:22 AM

wmv defently :thumbsup

James Greuel 12-06-2004 09:05 AM

Agent White
Wow!
That is the best encoding I have ever seen with WMV, the download took two minutes and it played fullscreen looking clear!

You have to share this, hit me up. It kicks ass, even beats Vegas!

James

Nima 12-06-2004 04:01 PM

so after all of this talk would you rather offer your members the full video in wmv or mpg because some offer both and others offer 1 or the other... it seems there is no right or wrong
