Cell Phone - Worth the $700.00USD? (PICS)

I know SHIT when it comes to anything phone related. I spend maybe 2% of my week on the phone, but it would be nice to have something that's sleek and handy.

So can you guys give me an honest opinion, on if it's worth it? If not, what other phone choices would you look at?
Right now, I'm only looking at Nextel based phones.

Thanks :thumbsup

Monterey, Calif. -- Motorola announced the Pininfarina Limited Edition Motorola i833, designed by Pininfarina, the design company behind such iconic cars as Ferrari and Maserati. This marks the debut of the first mobile phone to come out of the alliance between Motorola and Pininfarina.

"Pininfarina's consolidated cultural and industrial roots, formed in over 70 years of design activity, and Motorola's 75 years in the field of communications, represent an essential point of convergence in this new relationship," said Paolo Pininfarina, chairman and CEO of Pininfarina Extra, the division of the Pininfarina Group dedicated to non-automotive industrial design. "Looking at the cell phone industry, I noticed a contrast between the technological progress and a lack of emotion and aesthetic personality. That is my vision: to turn mobile communication into an emotional experience."

Based on the Motorola i830 handset, the Pininfarina Limited Edition Motorola i833 mobile phone has a titanium-colored finish and a sleek shape inspired by the lines of a Ferrari car. The car-like housing of the handset also features a translucent internal lens that gives customers a peek into the "hood" of the phone, a gas tank-shaped audio jack cover and grill-like bottom connector cover, making this product ideal for the high-end auto enthusiast as well as anyone who appreciates quality design and luxury.

"The new line of Motorola iDEN mobile phones will combine the elegance typical of Pininfarina design with Motorola's technical innovations," said Rey More, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola's iDEN Subscriber Group. "Just as a Ferrari vehicle is as much about performance as it is about design, so too is this phone more than just a great design -- it's loaded with advanced technological features."

The Pininfarina Limited Edition Motorola i833 has a vibrant, 65,000-color internal display, walkie-talkie service for instant communication at the touch of a button from coast to coast and throughout much of the Americas, voice dialing and voice recorder, built-in speakerphone, external caller ID, GPS technology for location-based services, and Java(TM) technology for downloading ring tones, wallpaper designs, and applications. It will be sold with a leather pouch and unique desktop holder/pass-through charger.

The Pininfarina Limited Edition Motorola i833 mobile phone is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2004

$700 is way too much for a cell phone. You can get a great phone for $400 at the most.

Edit: You will see the same phone for $150 in 3 months.. so don't waste too much money on it.

BigWebRev 12-04-2004 05:02 PM

junk

ironlung 12-04-2004 05:08 PM

i wouldnt pay that much for a cell phone

wes 12-04-2004 05:13 PM

I wouldnt pay 700 for a cell, but it does look like a porsche.. so if you drive a porsche that would match

beemk 12-04-2004 05:35 PM

too much for a cell phone, i have the tmobile sidekick and i love it. it has a full keypad and aim/email/web. the web sucks and i dont use it but the aim and email work great.

cayne 12-04-2004 05:51 PM

Ugly. :2 cents:

tony286 12-04-2004 09:47 PM

its a phone for christ sake lol

Pipeline Q 12-04-2004 09:50 PM

What is the point of these $500 cell phones? I've always used the cheap one they give me. Works fine.

Phones are considered a status symbol sometimes.. I personally only bought one of those nifty phones for the mp3 player.. and it sucks so I bought an MP3 Player, so if you're buying em for the camera.. or video player don't bother, wait a few years till they've got it down.

fl_prn_str 12-04-2004 10:04 PM

If your paying more then $50 (USD) and its doesn?t give you a complementary b/j then your throwing your hard earned $$$ away!

ytcracker 12-04-2004 10:09 PM

i wouldn't really recommend it. you're obviously paying for the "history" of the cell phone and it isn't really that practical.

holds no real or perceived collectors' value either.

KobyBoy 12-04-2004 10:12 PM

I don't think that phone is worth $700. It's a motorola and they suck when it comes to reliability and reception. If you want a nice looking phone I just got the new Sony Ericsson K500i (http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?...=pp1&pid=10176) I highly recommend this phone.

Kard63 12-04-2004 10:47 PM

The phone posted by the topic author - yes for sure.

The two ass cown phones that followed - hell no.

Have to aghee with you, Motorola sucks, I always go for Nokia.

chowda 12-04-2004 11:35 PM

they cost money man..

ud be stupid to sign the 88 year contracts and get a free phone.

BuckLover 12-04-2004 11:36 PM

Wow! for $700.00 it better have a fucking blowjob feature!:eek2

MerchantSolutions 12-04-2004 11:47 PM

I don't get it.

Why's it in a jewelry box?

Vitasoy 12-05-2004 12:55 AM

Looks pretty slick to me.

d00t 12-05-2004 12:59 AM

700 bucks is a fair amount for a phone that will no doubt be outdated in 6 months from the purchase date.

I bought a sony k700i in july for $850 USD and its already way out of date.

Go with what advise is mentioned above - cheap phones do the same job regardless, you won't get better reception with the higher price tag. As long as its tri-band and has a sweet zoom lens for those times you are 2 steps below a hottie on the mall esculators you'll be fine :)

VeriSexy 12-05-2004 01:04 AM

I like it :glugglug

Mpegmaster 12-05-2004 01:46 AM

YOu should try the XDA O2 IIs

$700 for a phone?! Jesus.

The only thing I'd like to upgrade on mine would be being able to take pictures with it. Mine's not a picture phone.

xclusive 12-05-2004 11:00 AM

haha sort of the same feeling you get when you bang your watch up against the wall :1orglaugh :(

emthree 12-05-2004 11:04 AM

For all those that replied, thanks for the advice.
I'm probably going to look at something more practical and ready for every day useage. If anything, I can just send it away to get a customized body etc.

I have no idea how karma is involved, but that does happen from time to time when you over-think a a certain item.

Dear Mr. Bigshot:
The price has very little to do with anything. Like i originally said, I wanted to know if it's "worth it".
I'm sure most of the people in this thread can afford to buy three, but that doesn't mean they would do it without knowing about it first.
Congrads on being able to afford an expensive watch and phone, and whatever else :bowdown :jester :1orglaugh

But thanks again guys for all the feedback and picks, i'm going to head over to the dealer tommorrow.
This thread can die now, I don't want it to turn into some sort of penis and bank size comparison fight. :)

I bought the Motorola V400 phone last week and it was only $149 (it retails for $289), but so far it's a great phone :) I don't live on it, so it'll do me fine.
