Is there a way to take a square picture and cut it out in the shape of a heart?

Just use free form and a premade heart shape and you´re set.

use the automatic shapes.... find the heart, rasterize the layer, select the heart, then choose the layer you want to cut into the shape of a heart and press DELETE

You can't have pictures in the form of shapes unless you make transparent gifs.
