Google Toolbar Pagerank Info Is FAKE!

Google Tells Us that PageRank is for Entertainment Purposes Only
This is shocking news, I mean, we all knew PageRank was not something to look at too closely these days, but for Google to come out and say "The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only", kind of shocks me. I can not confirm this to be accurate, but a post at Search Engine Watch just a few minutes ago claims this to be the case. The member said that he emailed Google asking why a page's PageRank is zero and he got the following response from Google.

The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only. Due to repeated attempts by hackers to access this data, Google updates the PageRank data very infrequently because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is several months old. If the toolbar is showing a PR of zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasn't been updated in the last update. The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero. If a site is showing up in the search results, it doesn't not have a real PR of zero, the Toolbar is just out of date.
Apparently, Google is still using PageRank to rank sites but just not displaying the current value to the Google Toolbar user.

Time to uninstall that fucker if its true :thumbsup

Very interesting if this is indeed true. Thanks for the post :thumbsup

Don't confuse yourself. The PR displayed in the toolbar is real PR data. The fact is that it is merely a representation of pagerank calculated several months prior.

So if the toolbar PR has nothing to with the actual relevance of the listing, then it serves absolutely no purpose what so ever except entertainment. It means zilch. It's just a pretty green line. It doesn't matter if it's a year old, a month old, are an hour old. :glugglug

well is nice to know that we can all check and learn from each other...

Pretty much my train of thought too.

The Toolbar has just become worthless to webmasters IMHO.

if you think after reading that (no news to me ) PR is useless for the SE game and for webmasters , you have like no clue whatsoever and probably have not enough knowledge to make money with SE :2 cents:

Who's talking out of their ass?

"The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero."

whats your point ?

if you dont use google toolbar you cant use pagerank

its that simple,

also there are altered versions of the toolbar so you get the same info the algorythme uses to calculate your results

That PR was real at the time of the update, now it may be not, but it will be displayed as a new (real) PR at the time of a new update...

Okay. Maybe I am misunderstanding this. If the Google Toolbar PR is outdated and has no value as far as search results go, doesn't that make the toolbar PR useless except to webmasters that "think" that high PR in the toolbar means their sites rock? :helpme

it is outdated when there hasn't been an update for months if there has just been a new update it is not outdated

so you basically get old info , but still usefull , and the pagerank HAS value concerning the search results when it just has been updated

and again you have real time toolbars also , stop using the surfer version
:2 cents:

That is how i understand it.

Unless you are using the Toolbar to search with also but then, you dont need the toolbar to search you can just go to google.com for that.

this is very old news and has been known for a while now.
that however does not mean the PR is useless.... less inaccurate then before -> sure
but useless -> no way

there are other reasons to have the toolbar installed as well :)
