Now you know why they use Mules and donkeys to protect horses, and cattle.

They are very nice to people but will kick the shit out of something that threatens them.

Didnt know that about mules. Tough fuckers they are.

must have been a sick mountain lion, it actually only looks to about the size of the mule's head so it might have been very young as well. I think mountain lions prey on mules, wild horses etc when they can catch them

WoW! Mountain lion get's owned!

Although it may as well be a stallion against a house cat lol:1orglaugh

ironlung 12-02-2004 06:36 PM

The photos are supposed to be of a mule in New Mexico on a lion hunt (yes it is legal in some states). The mule is attacking the lion which we were told initially had already been shot by hunters.

Yes, a mule will attack a predator in this fashion. This is the same way a donkey would attack a dog or coyote, which is what makes (some) donkeys good guard animals. The photos are very graphic, but do show exactly the mode of attack a mule or donkey would use.

Was it already dead though? Look like he just is picking it up etc?

Fake Nick 12-02-2004 06:42 PM

so basically the lion had already been shot couple of times when the mule had a go at him , I mean really dumb jackasses !

Thats what I was thinking, also noticed the hunting dogs and the leather rifle case on the saddle that is empty.

dig420 12-02-2004 06:45 PM

I suppose it could happen, but I googled mule - mountain lion - predation just because it seemed off to me... most sources have lions hunting mules, they grab them with their front legs around the head and then disembowel them with the back legs.

I wouldn't put it past a mule to fend off a lion that wasn't hungry, but kill it? Just don't seem right.

I wouldn't call that little cat a lion.

considering they come around 8 ft long as adults, I would say that's a very young lion
