Can you put down base boards before you put down carpet?

My neighbor is having his basement built out and can't decide on the carpet but the contractor is done and wants to install the base boards and leave.

yes, it's possible. Happens all the time when carpet is replaced.

right lol and yes it is possible

this is commonly done, especially in high dollar houses with hardwood trim.

tack strips are nailed about a 1/4 in away from the baseboard and then installer uses knee kicker to stretch carpet up against the moulding.

gives a cleaner look.

You will have to remove them to install the carpet, or it will look like shit. The tool for stretching the carpet will fuck up the base boards

Not if its done by a professional carpet fitter.

Most of the 'decent' tools come with padding on the edges to avoid fucking with baseboards :)

Ill ask my brother I think he is a random surfer here at gfy and he is a professional carpet installer

cocky 12-01-2004 10:27 PM

I looked it up. Bob Villa, doityourself, and carpeters all say you install the baseboards first. 1/4" up.

Not that I doubted anyone.....

Thanks guys!

The contractor should know how to run the baseboard if he knows carpet is going down..

We do it all the time... Never any problems..
