Mainstream message boards & god complexes

What's the deal with mainstream message board and how strictly they are run. Mods with god complexes enforcing BS rules, post editing, removing posts & threads non-stop, bannings, etc.

Anyone else notice this or is it just me?

The Heron 11-30-2004 10:41 PM

I AM GOD!

Sly 11-30-2004 10:42 PM

I used to be a moderator at Site Point. Very strict. Lots of kids actually.

galleryseek 11-30-2004 10:46 PM

webmasterworld is a good example.

warlock5 11-30-2004 11:38 PM

Don't see too many people with 30,000 posts on those boards either.

Steen2 11-30-2004 11:42 PM

Because mainstream isn't run like a bunch of 19 year olds running around insulting eachother.

They usually try to remain professional.

get on msn :)

Most mainstream bbs are visited by kids doing $100/month. Very few Real business people post on them. A decent one is

Lol, you could say similar things about most large adult boards, however they are adults acting like kids.

That one is threaded, and mainstream has been using threads for years before adult, a few years back I remember wondering when adult boards would finally get to the threaded boards.. this is way before GFY of course..

The Bootyologist 11-30-2004 11:55 PM

I HAVE noticed that on mainstream boards anf forums. they are made with power:ak47:

Pornwolf 11-30-2004 11:58 PM

They are really uptight. Since most of the people who are anal on those boards aren't making much money, the power of their board persona is the only thing that keeps them going in life.

There are many kids too. For sure some of them in the future will do big things.

Once i mentioned at abestweb (which is like the no1 affiliate board) that I know several examples of sales rep. doing hundrends of thousands in sales per year from their own traffic and even the mods there said I was bullshitting :Graucho

galleryseek 12-01-2004 12:33 AM

sitepoint isn't bad.

Nima 12-01-2004 12:38 AM

I mainly use sitepoint and then geekvillage which is rather small but still good

pornJester 12-01-2004 12:44 AM

The board I was looking at when I thought of this thread topic was a chat board for Reality TV shows. You would think when you're discussing shows that are basically fueled by BS drama that the board wouldn't be so uptight. I was reading their posting rules and they're pretty high strung...

Quote:

In case you need the basics, here they are:
1) We want an intelligent, respectful member base.

2) No flaming, no baiting, no insults directed toward anyone other than contestants.

3) No discussions of racism, sexism, ageism, or any other ism.

4) Keep it PG-13. That means that "damn", "ass", "bitch" and "bastard" are acceptable, but anything beyond that is not and will be edited or removed.

5) The mods are the people in red. They are in charge of the site, and ONLY they are in charge of the site. If your name's not red, and you see something that violates our rules, you need to use the "Report Post" function (the little triangle sign under someone's avatar), or private message someone in red.

6) Add something of value to a thread, if you're going to post. Don't quote a whole post only to add "yeah that". Don't bother posting "so-and-so is soooo hawt!". Posts that mods feel are wastes of space will be removed. Users that mods feel are wastes of space will likewise be removed.

7) Don't start a thread if another thread on the first 3 pages of a forum is similar and can be used instead. When you DO start a thread, make sure it's in the correct forum.

8) We have very little tolerance for people who use lingo, don't use proper English, type in all-capital letters, or use excessive smileys.

9) Utilize our "Show Discussion" threads for discussions of that evening's shows, and don't start new threads to discuss what happened on that night's show, even if the night is over.

10) Our recaps are written by our wonderful writers (whose names appear in blue). It is impolite to use the recap threads to discuss the show - use the Show Discussion thread. The recap threads should be about the recap. Thank them for their hard work each week, since that's the only payment they receive.

11) Read our other rules. We expect our members to be familiar with them, and follow them, and don't expect "ignorance of the rules" as an excuse. Some sites have rules and don't enforce them - we're not one of them. Play nice, be good, and have fun.

Dravyk 12-01-2004 04:44 PM

A lot of those criticisms are valid! That's why my company made MainstreamWebmasters.com -- as a place where people who want to do REAL eCommerce can -- and they DO!

Yeah, we still don't allow spam. And no it IS non-adult, so you can't curse like a sailor either. But we already have seen board members increase their earnings, create new business relationships, and offer special values for our registered users in the brief time we've been up!

SitePro is strict as hell.

Webmaster World won't take advertising because they say it would prevent people from having open opinions. (???) They won't allow ANY taglines in your posts whatsoever!

WW even says in their rules -- I swear this is true! -- if you talk too much about a site of yours that someone can figure out what it is and get to it, they will delete your account! WTF is that??? Insane is what it is!!

Yeah, mainstream boards ARE bizarro. We're gong to change all that and help propel them into year 2005 where they should be. :)
