i am officially DISAPOINTED and ASHAMED to be a Canadian

There's a protest, not very far from here, protesting Bush's visit to be Canadian. I was fine with that, people are allowed to protest - it wasn't till I heard why they were protesting that I became ashamed to be a Canadian.....they're protesting Bush coming to Canada - get this - to ask for permission for Bush's 'missile defense system' to deflect nuclear weapons to Canada (instead of the US).

Christ - why are people like this allowed to continue to live?

Dagwolf 11-30-2004 04:24 PM

I don't think I understand what you just said... :helpme

Huh? You mean Bush is coming to Canada to try to deflect nuclear weapons TO Canada? SO if they launch at the US that they will deflect them to us up here in Canada?

If that's right, then why do you have a problem with folks protesting that ?

People are protesting Bush's visit to canada...because they think he's here to get permission to deflect Nukes aimed at the US to Canada....

rickholio 11-30-2004 04:26 PM

Lots of people protest for lots of things. You just happened to find a group that has no real clue.

The 'missile defense system' is a red herring anyways. The stuff they're working on doesn't (and likely never will, unless the "enemy", whoever that is, insists on using purely long range ballistics instead of MIRV or anything that'd allow the vehicle to alter course mid-flight). Reasonable people don't see the system as the problem nearly so much as the encroachment of US military presence on Canadian soil.

But you know kids these days. Any ol' reason to start an argument.

Assuming Andrew has the message right, then these people are simply confused. Missile defense is an emotional, hot-button item but the way some people conceptualize it is childish to the point of infantile.

The common consensus around the pundit circles is that shrub has no real clue about how to be a diplomat. He routinely avoids any situation where he'll be confronted personally with any sort of negative feedback about his handling of the world (take, for example, his cowardly avoidance of parliament for fear of being 'heckled'... the horror!). That being said, he's in a situation now where he *must*, for various purposes, present a diplomat's face to the world. Canada represents the place where he can try to practice and build what meagre skills he has in that area with no real substantial worries about being shot or bombed. We're a "Friendly Forum", relatively speaking.

Do you remember that Bush snubbed Canada because of the war?

Perhaps these people have leftover issues and this is their way of dealing with them.

Yes, it makes our country look bad - pathetic and anal and a little intellectually challenged (if the nuke thing is wrong) but that's the consequence of a FREE society - we have freedom of speech to air our grievances as well as our tribulations.

I just hope no-one tries to kill him while he's up here in Canada - we really don't need that kind of press... :1orglaugh

The Media will say what they want to tell you - you can choose to believe it. Most people are there because Bush is a terrorist and greed monger who puts innocent lives in direct danger to advance the financial status (re: Imperial) of his cronies.

Also, I'm ashamed you're a Canadian too

David! 11-30-2004 04:51 PM

What comes up must come down.
If a missile defense system is activited and shoot downs a missile, then whoever is beneath this will see fallout.

If you look at this map, then you will see that the shortest route for a Chinese missile would be straight north over Russia and then south over Canada which would be a lot shorter than going over the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, it is actually possible that if the US would shut down a Chinese missile, it would do so over Canada.
I do find it very unlikely though that any sane Canadian Prime Minister would actually agree to that or even agree to meet with the US President to discuss such a thing.

I'm with Icon and Pipecrew on this, I'm ashamed that Canada produced an adult who says shit like this without comprehending what the hell he's talking about.

Of course people are protesting the missile defense system, they should be. Everyone in Canada should be. Martin promised he would not get involved with it, and now it looks like he might. Spending billions of dollars to weaponize space is not a priority of most Canadians. It will also include America putting troops in Canada.

Canada should not get involved in this in any way, in fact they should openly oppose the US doing it like most of the world.

Caroline Parrish actually put together a pretty decent resource on the subject.

BRISK 11-30-2004 04:54 PM

Why should you be dissapointed to be a Canadian just because some people are protesting against something and you disagree with them?

Get a grip

Hey smartboy, did you know that Canada stands between Russian/Chinese missiles and the US?
Or is this too difficult for your biased mind to conprehend?

chaze 11-30-2004 04:56 PM

Exactly who does the US think is going to fire missiles at them anyway? The Cuban missile crisis ended a long time ago ... Russia's missiles never worked, Saddam never had anything that could get out of his backyard and North Korea's missiles are more likely aimed at Japan ...

Please someone in America get a grip .. your obsession with military might in today's world is as outdated as your concept of democracy.

All those thousands of soldiers, planes, missiles, etc etc didn't help prevent 9/11 and in Iraq your soldiers are being targeted by home-made bombs every day. Billions of dollars every year are spent keeping your military big, strong and proud and as we've seen in Iraq you need to use it every few years to justify it's existance.

Missile defence? My god, please tell me there aren't about 10,000 better ways to spend a few billion dollars? Health care, education, medical research, improving the slums in all your major cities, homelessness ...

So yeah, I can see why people are protesting Mr. Bush up here. He can keep his country's obsession with guns n' toys where it belongs: back home.

What Chinese/Russian missiles are you referring to? Wow, Mr.Bush and his comrades really HAVE brainwashed a lot of you simple-minded folk hasn't he?

If he said "we better build an underwater missile defence system against migrating humpback whales ... just in case they go nuts and start attacking Hawaii" you'd probably believe that too ....

wait let me get this straight, If the missiles would go over Canada
then would not the troops also march though Canada to get to the US. Oh and I am sure as they came though they would leave
you all alone as they went right?

Cr34t1v3 11-30-2004 05:54 PM

I think that we should be worried about the fact......that the US
.....is worried about this at all.

WW3?...why not. We KNOW Korea has WoMD. Dont we. :thumbsup

...and somehow...I doubt that Bush is asking that kind of permission...although...dumber things have been done. Its
just inconceivable.

WHAT TROOPS????

Have you people all lost your marbles? Exactly WHO are you thinking is going to march through Canada? WHO is going to go up to Alaska with their dog sleds, park their boats, trek through freezing terrain with it's killer mosquitos, ferocious grizzlies and field mice with huge pointy fangs ... and then hike on down through BC, over mountains, through forests and end up (eventually) in ... maybe, Oregon?

All the while this same as-yet-unidenitified-country is going to chuck a few long-range missiles at the US in hopes that by the time their insect-bitten, blistered-foot soldiers with a bad case of frostbite and porcupine needles in the arse can come in and wipe out what's left of Oregon, Washington and Minnesota???

This is a paranoid delusional scenario if there ever was one. NOBODY is going to attack the US with missiles, soldiers or boats. It is suicide and ultimately pointless ... any attack (successful or not) would result in total retaliation that would likely leave your imagined foe with huge craters and black rain for about 175 years.

If anyone on this board really, truly believes ANY country anytime in the forseeable future is going to attack the US in a full frontal assault (not a terrorist attack, that's completely different) than please post the following:

1) The country you believe will attack
2) The reason you believe they will attack
3) What you are smoking if you've actually answered #1 and 2

reynold 11-30-2004 06:17 PM

don't be disappointed just because you don't disagree with your fellow canadian. respect what decissions they make.
