dedicated host OS ?
I need some advice with dedicated hosting. basicely i have no experience with it and mostly all the OS have never used. The offer i get put several OS options. I am used to Windows XP, never worked on anything else...So which one would you advise me to use ?
FreeBDS OpenBDS Linux Windows 2k3 web +20$ Windows 2k3 standard +30$ The plan is a selfmanage one, that means i am the administrator. I will have to install imagemagik, tmda.cgi . As for their support, it's seems to be 50$/h per incident : http://www.layeredtech.com/self_managed.shtml So i am interest, it is just that i don't know in what i am going to plundge into, since i don't have any experience otherwise than with dealing with MYSQL and some cgi installation. The rest is blank to me... I don't want to pay for a world of pain. The galleries will be fine, but when it comes of setting up everything for the TGPs and the server security... Please don't spam me with host if it's not better than layeredtech prices and services...:winkwink: |
I've been hosted on linux (redhat), windows NT and up...and freebsd
freebsd has by FAR been the most solid/stable OS I've been hosted on... the other OSs are fine too if you have an admin that STAYS ontop of shit regularly....freebsd doesn't require continual admin the way the other OSs do...that's my take on it anyways... :thumbsup :thumbsup |
freebsd and find a sever admin cause you will fuck it all up with your experience level, or just go get a fully managed box at a reliable host.

BSD BABY!
what are they charging you? and which package did you choose? Let me knw we may be able to offer you fully managed for what they are charging you for self managed. Let me know |
simple answer.
http://www.ServerProvider.com/dedicated.html Fully managed. We install your scripts.. modules ... you name it we do it. And you save yourself the $50/hour. :thumbsup |

If this server is just for you to learn on then choose what ever you want but if it is for a live site with traffic it won't be worth the pain of seeing it down and costing you money while you are trying to learn how to administer it. Cantact me directly and I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the value Candid Hosting.com can deliver for you.:thumbsup |

antXX i would talk to mike if i were you to see what he has to offer...webairs managed server solution worked out great for me. |
they have a lots of plans. I am interest in the 65$:
http://www.layeredtech.com/servers.php I already pay 60$ in virtual hosting but i need that 1000gb transfers if i wants galleries. The price is what triggerred me to go dedicated. Also 2 other TGPs who have been posting me in the last year, have begun limited the submits coming from revsharehosting's IP, and that hurts me... The uplink is 10mbps. One thing i am not sure of, is the control panel option...There is plesk for +12$ and direct admin for +15$, or none at all by default. They have 3 versions for Freebds 4.X 5.X 5.X X86 64bit |

Plesk seems a very good control panel. I don't think i could go out without the control panel.

I say i am not use to those OS, but it's them who will setup the system. As for being the admin, of what i could see of Plesk for Unix (I will probabely install this with Freebds, which they also setup), i have been using that interface for the last 6 months at realitychecknetwork, as a virtual "client" (Or something very similar). So it's not like i will be in a complete strange country either. I am also a computer technician and was a delphi programmer for 2 years, so...i have the ability to learn softwares :1orglaugh .
It is still scary for me, but i will leave myself a month even if it means paying 2 hosting services for that month. After all i did my setups for autogallerypro (cgi) and all the php/mysql scripts since the last 3 years. The only thing i am not use to, is dealing with cron and C script setup. If i don't do it one day by my own... |
I love administrating Debian servers.
That OS is pretty stable, pretty secure (if done correctly) and pretty easy to admin (apt-get). Debian rocks for me! |
I love FreeBSD, but I also would not count openBSD out of the options either, a lot of bleeding edge stuff (pf /carp/systrace) started out in OpenBSD long before being ported into FreeBSD. There are times I have used OpenBSD for features not yet available in FreeBSD.
Like FreeBSD it is a stable O/S and was built with security in mind. |
redhat Linux hands down :thumbsup
We actually modify ours so it's still kind of redhat. Don't like: freebsd windows |

I would not suggest self managed if you have never worked with server before... but I would suggest Linux. I think that Linux is the easiest to work with, but it also depends on what you are working with.
If you are looking for a dedicated host we install all scripts and offer 24x7x365 support. If you are at all interested or want a quote please email or ICQ me and I will make you a good deal. Thanks! [email protected] ICQ 260-844-610 |
freebsd is best
every script kiddie wants to hack linux windows is for mainstream people who like to waste money |
FreeBSD is a good choice
Script installs are going to be difficult for a new guy, but you might be able to get the host to do them for you. The reason they charge less is because they are not providing a managed service. You might consider hiring someone else to manage the server for you. |
Well, i took freebsd with the Plesk interface. I will need to install imagemagik tho...
As for managing a server, i don't know what it's involving right now, but if it's too much troubles and hassle i will consider their other option (They do have a semi or full manage option). |

cd /usr/ports/graphics/ImageMagick/ make -D WITHOUT_X11 once that finishes, make install You could also try pkg_add -r ImageMagick (which grabs a pre-compiled version - but might not support all the options you need) |
FreeBSD or Linux!:winkwink:
