Here is what the e-mail said

"Hello and thanks for the email.
I have Windows Media Player version 9, Mac OS
version ...Yes, I'm a Mac user, Everytime I click on
the files to view. It automaticaly opens, launches WMP
but gives me this message =Window Media Player cannot
play this file, because the Player does not support
the file format. I cannot download them to my desktop
or harddrive until they have opened and started
playing. Once they are playing I could go up into the
file menu and "save as" However Right click on a Mac
does not give you this option
so I cant save them in order to open them in another
player.
The best thing for a MAc are Quicktime files,
however again quicktime does not support mpeg or AVI
files. So in order to view these types of files you
must go to download.com and download a version of VLC
media player, but again to open the mpeg files in VLC
I must first have been able to download the files to
my desktop or harddrive."

Does your site have the option to "download" or "stream?"

Macs do not get along with Windows Media player, most of the time, the issue is rooted in DRM I believe. You usually can't view them.

I think they have upgraded that feature on the WMP making it ok on many macs. OS 9 probably has a lot of issues with viewing them.

Yes it does download and stream. He was saying in the e-mail that he could go download a version of VLC, but he can't even download them. I don't know what to tell him or what to do.

And do you guys think it is worth it to put an option on the videos that is specifically directed to MAC users? No other members had ever said anything about it.

I would say no honestly, unless it is super easy on your part and then it falls into the "it can't hurt" category."

But few people have Macs in the grand scheme of things. It may seem like a lot do, but look through your server stats and I bet Mac OS' make up for less than 2 percent of your total hits. Moreover, they are a lot more expensive. Generally Mac users have PC's as well, cutting the need to cater to them down even lower.

You are right, this
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/125

was the last out of the list of 15. I just feel bad cause I wish there was something I should do.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to help out. I really really appreciate it :)

Yeah. Maybe he'll see this.

Might be best to hit his ICQ, anyway. Doesn't look like he's posting there much.

is that on their end?

by the way...I love your stuff, it's awesome! I actually referred someone to your site (a photographer) and they were like OMG....loved it!

abadfish 11-29-2004 10:51 PM

That's odd... the latest version of WMP plays almost any file I throw at it on my mac... I have noticed a few quirks with DRM files and a few codecs.... but overall not many problems... although I hate WMV files...

I prefer mpeg, seems to be a lot more compatible with different operating systems.... and not tied directly to Microsoft or Apple...

Make sure he has the latest version and have some other mac users you know check out the site for you.

FrankWhite 11-29-2004 10:54 PM

just use VLC
