Paralyzed woman walks again after stem cell therapy

A South Korean woman paralyzed for 20 years is walking again after scientists say they repaired her damaged spine using stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood.

Hwang Mi-Soon, 37, had been bedridden since damaging her back in an accident two decades ago.

Just think if the Christian Fundamentalists had their way she would still be in a wheel chair praying for Jesus to heal her.. :BangBang:

The use of stem cells from cord blood could also point to a way to side-step the ethical dispute over the controversial use of embryos in embryonic stem-cell research.
Would you guys like further assistance with your reading comprehension?

Screaming 11-29-2004 03:51 PM

wow that is amazing and wonderful

That has nothing to do with a fetus you moron.

In any case... that cripple is going to hell.

TheLegacy 11-29-2004 03:54 PM

well they are looking at getting those same stem cells from fat sucked out during liposuction - so hopefully soon we can all enjoy the benefits. I have diabetes and this would pretty much put an end to it.

I think the Fundamentalists are against all stem cell research not just using a fetus.

You thought wrong.

You would be wrong. They don't like stem cell research for a reason, and its not because they don't like people being healthy, its because they don't believe in using the fetus to perform stem cell research when there are several other ways to do stem cell research.

Did you know that? I think the bone can even be used for stem cell research. Imagine that.

why don't you go change some water into wine or something :drinkup

CamChicks 11-29-2004 05:23 PM

Scientists don't want to use fetuses. They want to use embryos. There's a big difference between a microscopic bundle of cells and a partially-formed baby (except to religious fundamentalists). The reason science wants to use embryonic stem cells over adult stem cells is that embryonic stem cells are more flexible because they havent decided what to be yet. If you're harvesting from bone or fat or wherever, you're too late to get the cells that have the greatest potential. It's great that they are able to use the umbilical cord to help this woman and others, but humanity will not know just how much we can do until we go the source and exhaust all the possibilities of embryo cells.

its funny to the right babies are sacred but putting prisoners to death is fine. I dont understand that. If life is scared to you all of it is sacred.

If it wern't for the religious nutcases, we would be 10-15 years advanced in spinal injury therapies.

I can't wait for this to happen more regularily.

yea no shit.. I can't see why so many people are against cloning either as far as body parts go. Think how many people could be saved if you could just grow a new heart or liver in the lab.

Then again we would probably over populate the planet real quick if everyone could live..

Yes, you are right. Killing a murderer is the same thing as killing a baby. Great observation, lol.

xclusive 11-30-2004 01:28 AM

That is wonderful news with tangable evidence like this that it actually work thing should get easier for the research because one of the main arguments for the religious right was that there wasn't even proof that it worked...

Actually there isn't a problem when it comes to creating new body parts. Havn't you ever seen them grow ears and other parts on the backs of mice?
