Problem installing Windows XP - any idea why?

I'm trying to install Windows XP after I formatted my HD, but when I use my LEGIT VALID Product Key - it doesn't go through, saying "Product ID is invalid". What the fuck is Product ID? I'm used to seeing "Product Key is invalid bla bla", but Product ID?!@ It's a COPY of the original WinXP installation CD, but I'm using my original legal Key.

Any ideas wtf is going on?

azguy 11-29-2004 10:30 AM

I've done this a million times with no problems..

Make sure there aren't any spaces when you're typing, and most product keys are case sensitive.

Sure, still doesn't work. It types in CAPS anyway.

I did. It has nothing to do with SP1 I don't think...

Besides, it doesn't say the "Product Key" is invalid. Instead, it says "The Product ID you entered is not valid".

Sosa 11-29-2004 10:47 AM

call up microsoft, they will ask you for the original and prolly give you a different one.

e-god 11-29-2004 10:49 AM

Probably your version do not match.

It's the same XP that was on the box originally. The CD is a copy of the WinXP copy from the OEM

If the CD was installed on a previous computer and was registered at microsoft using the internet you CAN'T install it a second time.

Check the microsoft website, it's in their new policy rules somewhere.

Wolfy 11-29-2004 10:55 AM

Well, when the legal ones don't work maybe you should try the other option.

But they don't even know! It didn't happen, but even if it did - this is not the reason, I don't think. It's still at the DOS-powered installation screens... Not even connected to the internet yet.

Tried. Same error. It's not the Key.. I've seen many "Invalid Product Key" errors before :winkwink: This one is "Product ID is not valid".. weird shit

Pornweaver 11-29-2004 10:57 AM

#1. You say it's a Valid Key. You didn't say you actually PURCHASED Windows XP.

#2. If indeed you DID purchase it, you MUST call Microsoft and get them to walk you through setting up the activation. They are the only ones who can reset it "legally".

That's it.

If i recall corectly XP doesn't prompt for the CD Key at the DOS-powered screen, it does at the startup of the window screen.

OOps. Well, I did purchase this Win XP, and I'm using a backup copy of it. I don't know where the original is..

Yeah, I guess I'll call. I'm trying onemore thing before I do the unthinkable and call Microsoft!

It's the blue DOS process.. It already has the WinXP GUI, kind of.

OEM CD's are sometimes linked to a particular PC. Is this a recovery disk and being used on a different PC? Or is this a flat out WINXP CD. It can make a world of difference. Something smells rotten in Denmark :winkwink:

No. Has nothing to do with it. The computer is not even connected to the internet yet... Something else must be wrong I think.

pussyluver 11-29-2004 11:13 AM

Use the orginal CD. If you can't find it, call MS. They will send you a new CD. Be sure you are legal all the way. You can rebuild your broken PC as many times as you want. If it's a OEM copy, be sure it for the PC you are installing it on.

MS requires orginal CDs on some of their products to install I think. I'd have to look Win pro up. You can do that with a quick trip to the MS site.

YEP! They said it's usually solvable by the "technical professionals" for a fee of $35 per incident. When I asked if it's related to BIOS, she said probably! :)

"All additional support requests are $35.00 US per request or use an existing contract

(800) 936-5700"

She actually mentioned that "by the way", I can also get a new copy of Windows XP. BITCH

Antonio 11-29-2004 12:44 PM

Try this: install previous version of Windows (95, 98, whatever) and try to install XP on top of it.

a1ka1ine 11-29-2004 01:10 PM

was it an oem copy or a full copy?

Paco, of Large Cash. 11-29-2004 01:13 PM

OEM is what the person sellng the pre-built PC would buy and use; retail is what you would buy/use.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

I have built

many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many

systems over the years.
2000 as well XP (aside from being CRAP) are very meticulous, unlike Windows best version of an OS ...98 S/E!

Remove ALL unnecessary hardware (leave video card, memory, hard drive, CD ROM and of course the mobo) and try the install.

Do not use the FAT32 file system for XP -- yes, you can but it is not recommended.

As for how to reset your bios, if you have an older motherboard: pull the CMOS battery (while the system is off and power supply unplugged) and power up the system with the battery not in.

What if I don't have an older motherboard?

I think I will use this as an opportunity to use Linux at home... :glugglug

Can't you borrow a cd with the same version from someone else and just use your own key? As far as I know that would be perfectly legal.

Paco,

If I buy a new OEM version of Win XP on ebay, would I have any problems installing it on that PC? Any conflicts with the BIOS I should know of beforehand?

Thanks!
