Is there a limit to how many files can exist in a directory? Specifically, on a server running linux/apache?

Can you think of any problem having like 300,000 photo files in a single directory?

Only problem I've had with too many files in a directory is with FTP, it's sometimes slow to load up the list.

If you are doing images I would try to put them into sub's. That will make searching easier. And ftp programsa will load faster I think.
