gifts for soldiers?
 

one of my good buddies is heading overseas to iraq next week for a year and we are throwing him a party tonight... any ideas on what to get him? of course we got his beer covered and we're giving him a picture of all of us and a card, but i dont know what else to get? what do soldiers want/ need? any ideas would be most helpful. :thumbsup

I dont know his beliefes, but maybe a cross that he can pin to his bdu's or somthing along those lines.

If he is not into religion, a good new watch that will take a beating. Like one of the G-Shock ones. Something with a light, but make sure that it is not something that can be turned on easy.

one of my best friends was over there for the first persian gulf war. he was saying that things guys over there really want are: magazines and books, CD and music, munchies like nuts, jerkey, candy stuff like that, baby wipes ( to clean the sand and crap off your face, out of your ears etc. and toilet paper :)

just a few ideas.

another thing to consider is a bullet proof jacket. There are still a lot of soldiers over there that don't have them and many of those that do have old, bulky and shoddy ones. If you/he can afford it a nice, new hi-ed bulletproof jacket would be nice.

Get him a kick-ass pair of boots. If the "boon-dockers" are anything like the ones issued to us when I was in, his feet are going to HATE him. A good pair of Danners (www.danner.com) would do the trick.

ipod photo would have been a great gift, a bit pricey on short notice, i shouldve asked for suggestions a week ago... i think i may run out to get some porn dvds and magazines and perhaps a good swiss army knife tool combo thing? everything else sounds good too, thanks for all the suggestions.
