i would say FPS gamers and/or hackers. There's probably no definate answer.

But those were the groups I remember using the term a long long time ago.

ya long before counter strike was around it was used for like "i owned that website" or that box or whatever.. take over or at least dos it.. or just computer A owns computer B or something comparing performance..

I think the people in florida came up with the term when talking about al gore back in 2k.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but it started with script kiddiots defacing hundreds of small and sometimes large websites with the term "owned" as the frontpage. Script kiddiots then formed groups to see who can be the most pathetic and compete to deface the most sites. This led to the mass defacing of hundreds of sites per day.
