how society works

we came from a system with a king where we didn't matter

moved to individuality.

as a species - can we actually grow with this individual is everything attitude we have now?

don't the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the needs of the one.

would a superior race from space embrace the same individualistic mindframe? I doubt it

so the queston is - and this is a doozy - when will it end and we move on into some other system that suits the human race as a whole more? in our lifetimes - in our childrens - their childrens - their childrens - when?

WarChild 11-26-2004 01:42 AM

Let's hope it happens soon .. I soooo want to fly around in a Borg cube and assimiliate people.

Jay_StandAhead 11-26-2004 01:42 AM

It's going to happen soon - but I don't think those in power will use it for the "good" of humanity.

xclusive 11-26-2004 01:44 AM

We are having our liberties taken away every day more and more and they don't have our best interest at heart now what makes you think that they will then?...

OzMan 11-26-2004 01:44 AM

Darwinian principles are no good in your book? What you are talking about is communism, by the way. And we all see how well that played out in the countries that tried it, didn't we?

Good question, SD. But the whole 'individualistic' culture you refer to is more prevalent in some cultures than others. Here in Asia, privacy is defined less as individual privacy but as family privacy or village privacy. Hence, its very important to 'save face.'

Moreover, the whole current European/Western idea of individualism is driven by economics and technology. Prior to the automobile and mass production, people were relatively stuck in towns where they could grow social roots. The whole town was your extended family. With the advent of automobiles, the nuclear family became the standard instead of the extended family.

There may be a backlash and the pendulum may swing backwards but it would have to be pushed by economic and technological forces.:2 cents:

You know that shows how stupid you actually are. The smartest people will always form questions simply and thoughtfully for a child to understand. You are talking about evolution and then talking about space people...go talk to Art Bell buddy! He has a board for space aliens

SleazyDream 11-26-2004 01:52 AM

there is NOTHING, i mean NOTHING sweeter than calling someone an idiot on GFY and having them DEBATE the point.

:thumbsup

Communism is unfair for the worthy, and it directly opposes nature and even life itself on its most fundamental principle (survival of the fittest), so keep hanging on to that notion if you want to continue to make yourself look like an imbecile.

ahh but that's the individual mentality again.

assume we're attacked by alians - would our chances be better thinking individually or together?

Paul Welles 11-26-2004 01:57 AM

You know what the best is??

communism is not so different from capitalism when you look at who's really running the show and getting rich. Bottom line is NONE of the two systems have the greater good of the people in mind.

I like the analogy that Sleazy made about alien people, and what system they'd use. I bet they'd be a lot smarter than us about it.

The IRONY about Communism is that it was inspired by Darwin's "survival of the fittest" concept. Marx actually wanted to dedicate the 1848 Communist Manifesto to Charles Darwin. Marx was saying Feudalism was less fit than Capitalism so it got superseded. Then he imagined Capitalism being less fit than Communism.:1orglaugh

That doesn't make sense. We don't need communism in our lifestyles or economic system to cooperate against a common enemy. In fact, cooperating with your peers against your enemy is a form of individualism since doing so best secures your own interests.

Yes, it was so gloriously fit that countries to this day still struggle to recover from it, like it was a disease.

You didn't. You spoke of dystopian idealisms that I found to be not much different from communism.

SleazyDream 11-26-2004 02:05 AM

lets describe this differently .

i'm all for capitalism in our current society.

I'm NOT for inherentance.

how can i compete with some rich brat that has millions his daddy gave him? i'm all for things like health care and good public education and good roads - but i end it THERE. government stay the fuck out of my business and life.

our society will be in trouble if those with inhertance money grow richer. if you change the rich every generation with the brightest you don't have a problem with our current system - if the rick just get their kids to take over - we have a problem and the system will eventually break down

i think by the year 2015 we will have had the next world war, at which time most of the US as we know it will have been wiped out, only to leave us with small tribes across the land we live in now..

we will have to rebuild and a new way of living will emerge

Repetitive Monkey 11-26-2004 02:11 AM

Alright, if you want to discuss possibilities for a better civilization then I will gladly throw my two cents in.

End multiculturalism and imperialism, the result of which will be an almost total end of major conflict. Restrict government spending on any kind of religious or special interest groups. People who wish to crusade for a particular way of thinking better fund it themselves. Attempt to introduce a more democratic form of democracy in the most enlightened countries and see if it can be applied to more countries with time. I am talking about a form of democracy where the people vote on issues rather than people to decide on the issues for them. Introduce voluntary eugenism.

Want me to go on? Feel free to challenge my listed idealisms, by the way.
