Flash button...Good idea???

I just had a bad ass flash button made. But, now I'm hearing that only about 70% of people will see it because of old or turned off browsers.

Is this number accurate? I would really like to use my button, but I won't if I'm missing 30% of traffic.

I wonder if there is a way to make java or something for if their browser won't read it, then it downloads a different normal button.

how about using a plain text link or a nice GIF?

I hate it when I go to a site and it has 15 different little java applet buttons.

Well, cause flash looks 10X better.

Where are the flash experts?

I don't think it's 70%, it's more than 80 for sure, but there are scripts which can detect if the surfer has the flash plug-in. If not, you can send the surfer to a normal page without the flash buttons. The scripts are in javascript or programmed in flash, so you have 2 options for detecting it.

I know that there is a way to load a different page for users that don't have flash... Not sure about just changing the button though.

Keep in mind that sites that use flash for navigation aren't spidered very well by most search engines. For example, if you submit your flash site to a search engine, it will probably only index the page you submit. All other pages linked through flash buttons won't be found in the search engine. At least that has been my experience.

Best bet is to have an alternative html menu on the bottom of the page so the search engines will index all your pages. Unless you want to submit every page of your site.

(CUT AND PASTE) Flash 4 Help File http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/rolleyes.gif

Use the Publish command to prepare all the required files for a complete Flash application on the web. Publish prepares not only the Flash movie itself for the web, but creates alternate images in a variety of formats that display automatically if a Flash player is not available. Publish creates the supporting HTML document required to display a movie (or an alternate image) in a browser and control browser settings

When you choose an image format such as GIF, JPEG, or PNG, Flash automatically add's the required HTML code to display the image if the Flash player is not available
