Anybody ever been to a sentencing?

I got notified today that the hit-and-run driver that ran over me & my motorcyle last year, will be sentenced on Jan 3rd and I get to speak to the court.

This is the guy that put me in a wheelchair for a few months and permanantly fucked up my leg and caused me to live with pain in my knee and ankle for the rest of my life.

He has been to prison before and was on probation when he hit me and then ran, which is a felony. So I'm sure it wont just be a slap on the wrist, but you never know.

Anyone here been thru this before, addressing the court as the victim of a crime?

Been there, done that. This will bring you the closure you are probably looking for. Remain calm and collected, and just speak your mind the best you can. Good luck man. :)

don't forget to say stuff like..

"and now i'll never be able to run around and play football or soccer with my son like most dads"

even though you don't have a son

Ah... accidents. Reminds me of when I had an car accident... with a bus, some 3-4 years ago. It was the driver's fault, but there really wasn't a point in testifying against him, knowing it would send him to jail for quite some time. It was a mistake and this guy has family. 3 little girls. Since nothing physical happened to me, I never bothered to do more than make sure I get paid in full for the damages.

Well it wasnt that simple for me. This guy hit me and left me laying in the street. He didnt even call an ambulance for me. I was in a wheelchair for 3 months and then crutches for three month, have a permanant loss of mobility in my knee and ankle. Had to have surgery to put in a bone graft, a titanium plate and 6 screws to hold my knee together.

Plus a loss of about $50k in lost income and $70k in medical bills and property damage. I dont see why the guy should just get away with it, when he didnt even stop after he ran over me. He needs to go to prison for a few years for fucking up my life and making things difficult on my family for quite a while. He was already on probabtion for an 'alcohol related charge' (they wont tell me exactly what charge) and he had been in prison before.

Sure, it may have just been an accident, but leaving me just laying in the street, hoping he wouldnt ever have to face his responsibilites, thats a felony. Did I mention that he didnt have insurance either?

Your fortunate you are not in California. Jury found a cab driver in San Fransisco "guilty" of using "excessive force." A CAB DRIVER! He witnessed a strong arm robbery and chases the suspect down with his cab and pinned him against the wall till cops arrived. Broke the robbers leg. He sued from prison. And won 25 grand!!!!!!!!!! A convicted robbery suspect who beat an old woman to the ground.
