People that quit smoking?

any tips on supporting a partner that is trying to quit? I have never smoked so I know that I don't have a clue what he is going through.

Don't light cigarettes.

Worked wonders for me about 16 months ago.

I quite 5 months ago, and my fiancee never smoked

if you want to hit me up on icq we can go through this but...

he needs your encouragement not judgement

if he faulters and smokes again, make sure he knows that its okay, that it could be the last mess up he has before success.

quiting cold turkey is the best, yet most difficult, remind him that it only takes 3 days for your body to stop being addicted, the rest is actually in his mind. Thats the worse part. Give him some gum or treats and work with him.

Get him to tell you when hes feeling he may fall - and work with him, be patient and always encouraging. ask him to save the money up weekly he would hvae spent, and use it on a night out.

Dont keep mentioning it - try and help him find the key reasons and situations he used before that triggered him to start smoking, then work on removing them or finding an alternative

good luck. it is worth it

Take up chewing or a similar addiction :thumbsup

What I did to quit was tear apart the rest of my cigs into 3 pieces each except for one. Smoked it all the way down to the filter, then smoked the filter.. I got so sick I couldn't imagine smoking again.

BastarD 11-22-2004 03:36 PM

Yeah, chewing gums are sweet awsome for quit smoking, especially ment :thumbsup

But I will never quit smoking :321GFY :smokin :rasta

if he gets grumpy dont get angry at him... just bite your bottom lip and realise that it will be over in a few days....

candyflip 11-22-2004 03:38 PM

With hold the blowjobs and sex until he quits. :1orglaugh

The physical addiction is really minor compared to the mental addiction which isn't easy to overcome

I wonder why no one ever mentions that book from Allen Carr (spelling ?)

It made quitting extremely easy for me. I started again a few months later though :( But I don't blame it on the book

I would never judge him. The only thing I am weary about is that when he tried once before he got really snappy. I know that comes with it and I will try to take it in my stride but quiting something doesn't make it okay to hurt the people you love. Counting to ten and leaving the room is good for both sides sometimes.

Going on the patch really helped me maintain my sanity when I quit. I was still an asshole, but nothing like the asshole I would have been otherwise. The patch really took the edge off of quitting. Just work your way down in patch size. Then only use them every other day. Before you know it, he won't want them at all. I didn't finish a whole box of patches, before deciding that I didn't need them anymore. I gave them to a friend who tried to quit a month later.

Of course, I was quitting no matter what. I had recieved such a wake up call that there was no way I wasn't going to quit. I would have just suffered through the with draw and bad moods.

Also, give him lots of space. When I'm pissy, the last thing I need is someone in my face, even if they're trying to be nice and helpful. It's nothing but an annoyance to me.

he goes through about four or five ounces of rolling tobacco a week. He has some machine that rolls them. I am allergic to smoke so it would be nice for him to stop but I try my hardest not to pull the 'you are killing me' card.

One of the best things you can do to support a person trying to quit is to drop small hints re how they wanted to quit before or coughed/had a bad time before. This really helped me a lot.:2 cents:

THIS is so very true, and it's not just CET who gets pissy....

I quit for him. I had smoked for 10 years, but my addiciton wasn't the nicotine. Mine was something to do with my hands, and I fell back on smoking as a way to ease stress.

Near the end, I was down to half a pack or so a day unless I was in a social situation which required me to be in a large group in small surroundings, i.e. a pub. Then I would smoke like a fiend.

I quit the first time in 2000. Stress got to me earlier this year and I started up again, only to stop in July. Haven't touched one since.

Just be there for him. It's hard, and he may well end up being a total bitch about it. Just be there and know that it's not really YOU that's the problem.

You're welcome to hit me up on Q anytime you need to talk. :)
