Mainstream affiliate programs

Anyone have any idea why mainstream affiliate programs pay so little? (Amazon, Dell, etc.) I understand that if you have a site that you run for the fun of it or part time (that is related) and you throw up a banner or link that it's decent extra money for sites, but for full time non-adult webmasters, how can they make alot of money?

Anyone here run mainstream sites and use affiliate programs? (and I'm not talking about dating sites either)

I can speak to you first hand about mainstream. I am slowing removing myself from a company that has an affiliate program that was totally mainstream.

Basically mainstream companies are very gun shy and despise the adult industry, mostly because of their online success, it is hard to deal with Webmasters and programs.

Now going back to my roots in adult, I along with some great partners are starting a new adult/alternative program with some great products and sites.

cj.com has many affiliates that will pay well but you certainly have to pick wisely for instance netflix free trials do very well for me...

There several sponsors paying high %. What you market is the main reason. I haven't seen adult dvd sponsors paying 50% either you know.

I run several mainstream affiliate programs and always have going back to my days wit h a major surfwear company thats in the majority of all malls around the country... Lots of overhead and smaller profit margins. But then again it comes down to what it is your selling... Is there a real cost for the sponsor (tangible goods)

Yeah, but Dell for example only pays 1%. Seems alittle low for such large purchases. 5% would be fair IMO.

MixedGoods.com - primarily As Seen On TV products, which do very well if you know anything about search engines. I know the owner very well, so I can vouch for the company.

Do you happen to know what the commissions are?

Thank you :)

There are also some decent networks that have payouts per sale, lead, etc.

AffiliateNetwork
ShareASale
AffiliateFuel
CPAEmpire
clickXchange

Up to 65%. Most programs do 10-15 sometimes 20.

Each product has its own payout. I try to make sure 80% of the profit goes to affiliates.

oh,yeah that kind of percentages are lame and its not only that, they are even strict on approval etc

goodgirl 11-21-2004 03:27 PM

Thanks baddog.

I have been trying to make a better mainstream affiliate program. I agree with sickkittens they usually pay very little. I wanted to push mainstream stuff, but not for 5-15% bs that they pay.

Yeah. I think the only way you can make good money w/ a sponsor like Dell is to have 100% targeted traffic. I noticed places like Ben's Bargains always has Dell on his list, so if he sells a bunch computers a day with decent conversions, he makes out alright. Then again, to make $100 a day with Dell you need to sell $10,000 worth off stuff. :(

I'm not crazy about a couple of those because they usually only have those offers that piss surfers off.

"Get a free sample of..." and then the surfer gets spammed for life.

Well many will spam after a customer buys a physical product as well.

Whatever you do, if you need some free directories to submit to:
http://www.overthemark.com/seoblog/item/11

I approve links once a week. And you don't have to link back or pay.

I know another good list but won't post it, feel free to contact me if you want to know where it is.

Thanks. What's your ICQ?

By the way, why are there only a couple submissions on each of those directories? Or am I not looking it at right?

They are only a few months old. I'm getting links submited daily now.

They do get spidered often by yahoo, google and msn.
