    external hard drives..

ok... i'm sick of fucking maxtor for externals..

i've got three.. and though they started out fine... i now hate them all with a passion.

who makes a good, reliable external drive that wont fucking drive me insane with fan noise or 'delayed write failure' messages or corrupt files at the exact moment i need something?

    firewire/usb2.. either way.

No wonder you're having problems, Maxtor makes crappy harddrives. Western Digital have always worked really well for me. Seagate makes a pretty good harddrive too. I would say SCSI, but they'll cost you and you have to get a controller card. The good bit is that they're fast, reliable and you can daisy chain about a fuck ton and a half of them together onto one controller card.

I don't know about externals, but as far as internals go, I used Maxtors for a long time. Partly because I had heard that Western Digitals were crap. Oddly enough, I had to keep reinstalling Windows for various reasons, then finally I decided I would try a Western Digital because one was on sale.

Well, 1 year later I'm still using the same WD drive and I have not had any problems. I had always heard that Seagate was the best for internals (before Procomm disintegrated -- where did they go?) and I imagine they would have superior quality in the external drives.

Long story short, I have never had a good Maxtor drive.

Not sure what you're using it for or how much storage you need but you can't go wrong with a DataMax 4160. It's obviously not firewire or usb but if you spend a couple extra bucks and go the SCSI route you'll have speed and realiability that you'll never achieve with firewire or usb. I went with the 1TB raid 5 config with a 512MB cache and this thing is fast as hell! Plus with a raid 5 config if you ever loose a drive just replace it and the other 3 drives will rebuild the data lost on the bad drive! If you're data has any value whatsoever don't fuck around with anything less than raid 5 SCSI!

I have had a maxtor for 6 months now and never a problem. I love how you can just USB plug and play it to any computer instantly I am sure all ED's have that though
