I've got a little domain name issue
I would like to hear your comments.
Last month I registered an awesome domain name (so I think). I was amazed it was available and built a little mainstream portal on it. to explain: the domain is like this: keyword1keyword2.ext a very nice combo. An hour ago the owner of keyword1-keyword2.ext (notice the dash) Called me.... He said he understand that it was his fault that he didn't register my name a few years ago... but he also said he wants to own my name. He offered me to pay my "business expenses" and a little more. He was a little whiny and shit... Would like to know what you'd do. As far as my legal knowledge tells me he has no legal rights to get my name... so should I let it go? Lemme hear your comments/thoughts. |
depends on what he is offering and what you planned to do with it.
|
ran into something like that a few eyars ago
the owner of a similar domain had trademarked their name and was willing to go to court over the similarities wasn't worth it to me so i sold it to them not much help i guess but again it comes down to how far are they willing to go to make your life miserable and how much you want the domain |
If he has trademarked it sell it to him. If not tell him to GFY or come with a serious offer.....
|
What if you buy a .com domain but there are other domain names like .net .org and .us registered. Since the .com domain was probably registered first, are you able to trademark it after the fact and then get hold of the .net, .org, .us, etc. ones in court?

thanks for all comments so far keep it comin |
his fault that he didn't register a few years ago? Nigga please, he's had a chance last month and he didn't use it. unless his name is trademarked, see how much he's offering you, and if it ain't enough... tell him to fuck off. you might even get some typeins

he reached the site by a typeing his name without the dash to see if it would be available lol |
like everyone says... if he has a trademark you're screwed if not he's screwed.
I think it also matters what kind of words we're talking 'bout here. Dictionary words or an actual brand. |

nothing actually branded |
i'm a bit skeptical about that. very tricky.
|
Trademark it and take his.
|
Is it something you think will really make you a lot of money? If so keep it other wise sell it to him at a high price.

A trademark will only prevent you from selling the same stuff he has a trademark for.Yoy can always make the site about somethhing different. Also unless its a real well known trademark he has got buckleys anyway.Hold out for thousands or carryon developing the site. BTW dwud.org is uo for renewing. You havent changed the admin contact.. |
same sort of thing happened to me about a year ago. i registered keywordkeyword.com and the guy's web developer called me about a month later saying hey we're from keyword-keyword.com you got to that name before us and offered a couple of hundred for my troubles. I obviosly said fuck that... they were really desperate for it, their final offer was 5k but I still didn't take it. I set up a small niche portal on that domain (non adult) and it brings me a nice check every month, all from type ins :)
