Basicly protools is an integrated hardware/software solution
for audio/video editing.

Theres also a protools lite version that runs on a computer without protools hardware and uses standard devices like your
soundcard etc..

But thats like playing microsoft flight simulator without a real airplane..

What do you need it for?

Bryan Havoc 11-17-2004 12:30 PM

I actually use Nuendo. It works well for what I use it for. If I ever start using it for more serious/professional stuff I'll pick up protools.

KingAsher 11-17-2004 12:31 PM

I know a little bit about protools, as far as how to use it, my buddy is a fairly well known producer, made it on the Black Album, I was chillin with him for a couple of years prior to that release and he showed me a lot of what he does and how he does it. Havent tried it myself tho, that rig costs a pretty penny, especially with the G5 and a 21' cinema screen.

The closest thing to protools is the latest version of logic audio + control decks..

I intended to use that for sequencing and pre-recording only
but for audio theres not much difference in possibilities between
an expanded logic audio rig ($12k or so) and a basic PT setup ($40k+).

I have both setups and found myself using logic for everything 90% of the time. I do use a lot of outboard gear so i dont have the need for a lot of plugins: an area in which PT simply rules ;)

Naw I'm talking about Jay-Z's Black album, the last song on the album was produced by him, my little claim to fame is I helped choose which Biggie intro to use and how the beat should drop, really a weird feeling knowing that I was right there when the beat was made and now its being heard by millions of people, cant imagine how the actually artists themselves feel, must be an awesome feeling to influence so many people with your music.

stereolab 11-17-2004 01:02 PM

what kind of music are you interested in producing?
