Between me and my staff we have 8 newer-model dell laptops, and all are decent. I tried getting linux to load on 2 of them and finally gave up and went with a thinkpad.

why get a 15" screen?

I've been waiting to get a 17, but now that Wireless N is around the corner I might wait a few more months to upgrade and make sure the notebook has it.

emthree 11-17-2004 09:47 PM

Looks good, I think i'm going to buy one.

xclusive 11-17-2004 09:49 PM

I already have a 17" widescreen, maximum resolution isnt that different than a 15.4"

That's a good desktop replacement notebook, but for comparison, the Dell Inspiron 8600's with the Pentium M chip (1.7Ghz processor speed) and their large memory cache are nearly as fast as a 2.6-3.0 Ghz Pentium 4 chip with much cooler run temps and way more battery life. My Inspiron 8600 is fast enough to run Premiere Pro for example, yet will still get over three and a half to four hours of battery life with moderate use.

StacyCat 11-18-2004 12:39 AM

Its HEAVY!

the 8600 (or whatever series is out now) has about the same performance with a much lighter weight.

The XPS is designed to go on a desk, and only occasionally be portable.

I like Dell less for their hardware quality but more for their Service. My dumbass ex girlfriend dropped my Dell laptop last May and Dell was quick with a free replacement WITH upgrades cuz the model config was phased out.:thumbsup
