extern harddrive....

are they good ?

im planning to buy a 250gb extern harddrive

usb 2.0

should i do it or not

nofx 11-17-2004 05:04 AM

do it
do it

what will you be using it for? all adult biz related stuff or what?

Yngwie 11-17-2004 05:04 AM

all depends. is it for storage only or do you want it to be bootable? (Have an OS installed on it)

If you want it bootable then External USB is no good. (can't be booted from) If not then sure, go for it.

Yngwie 11-17-2004 05:05 AM

would need to be connected to the motherboard with IDE cables to be bootable..

I love my external hard drives!!

but I had a big one 160gig and it was too big.. it took forever to search thorough it or run any kind of file check on it..

what I did was buy a few smaller usb ones 60 and 80 gig and they are really great

leg4 11-17-2004 05:13 AM

we've been using externals for 2 years...

you cant go wrong

xclusive 11-17-2004 05:15 AM

There is no reason not too with the 2.0 you should be fine but stick with the big names when choosing a drive you don't wanna take the risk of a lesser known company with your data...

i swear by lacie but a friend of mine just got a seagate. seagate cant be that bad since they are common internal drives.

i have used my lacie going on 10 years and have never had a problem.

stay away from maxtor. you pay for problems with them.

MaDalton 11-17-2004 05:19 AM

i sold several maxtor one touch external hds as a backup solution to my customers (we are also computer dealer), also using them by ourselves. works great. let me know if you're interested, i can order some at our wholesaler and let them send it directly to you. maybe i can give you a good price. :winkwink:

maxtor works great for us - have you ever looked into your LaCie case what drive there is built in? Cause they don't manufacture the drives by themselves.

i have bought 5 maxtors because they were infinitely cheaper then any other external out there and everyone crapped out on me. you know what it's like to lose gigs of content?

i will never buy another maxtor as long as i live.

seagate i would give a try if my lacie ever crapped out but i have a 100 gig lacie and not one problem in 3 years.

If I remember right it was around $90 for the 80 gig and around $60 for the 60gig

If you shop around you can find some pretty good prices online

yes, i know - and it was a Western Digital drive. We had also about 10 IBM drives that failed and one Samsung. And as I said, LaCie does not build the harddrives themselves, they just buy them and put them in a nice and stylish case. and then they cost double.

find me one harddrive manufacturer that has never produced a series without any failures. you won't find one. Keeping backups is the only solution to that. Never rely on only one harddisk.

:2 cents:
