Cranberry sauce?

Anyone besides me make their own? Anyone want the recipe? It tastes best after having a week to settle.

Can't stand that canned shit. I want SAUCE, not an over-glorified jello mold.

Peaches 11-16-2004 04:35 PM

My Mom makes her own but we also have the stuff in the can for those of us who like it too :)

gregtx 11-16-2004 04:35 PM

I believe its just boiling water... cranberries.. and sugar.. there is a recipe on the bag of cranberries at the store... we normally make our own as well :)

Sarah_Jayne 11-16-2004 04:36 PM

I don't trust it unless I can still see the ridges of the can pressed into the blob.

webmaster x 11-16-2004 04:37 PM

nah, usually we buy the canned one.

BoNgHiTtA 11-16-2004 04:38 PM

My mom makes some with a little orange peels in them, oh man thats the bomb shit I tell you. It doesn't get better than that!

And I wont be going home for Thanksgiving either. Sucks.

Exactly - cutting guides :)

Tala 11-16-2004 04:43 PM

I make mine like this:

2c water
2c sugar
2 bags of cranberries
2 boxes orange jello

Believe it or not, this doesn't turn into a jello mold. It's a really nice orangey-flavor-tinged cranberry sauce and if I make something other than that particular recipe, my husband goes apeshit. :(

It makes 3 full pints. I can it for Xmas and Thanksgiving and have one left for whenever his majesty wants it. :)

LOL

No need for cutting with mine. It's spoonable.

MandyBlake 11-16-2004 04:44 PM

Excuse me?
Don't knock the canned cranberries!
They are a time saver.
And who can turn down cranberry flavored jello? No one I know! lol

xclusive 11-16-2004 04:45 PM

Good recipe thanks i'll give it a try...

DAMN, you sound like my family. I love the Ocean Spray canned kind, but I also like the real homemade kind too, I just never have had any luck making it. I do something wrong with it and that shit is so sour that you can't possibly eat it.... as a matter of fact, you know that REALLY sour candy? I think they stole that concept from me after eating my cranberry sauce. lol

Sarah_Jayne 11-16-2004 05:10 PM

They are different animals with different reasons for being. I like both but the blob variety melts nicely into the potatoes and corn.

Pete 11-16-2004 05:15 PM

I definately dont like the canned stuff. Never tried home made though.

Extreme Holly 11-16-2004 05:23 PM

I just go for the canned, my cooking skills are pretty shitty.

Peaches 11-16-2004 05:26 PM

Okay, here goes:

2c sugar
2c water
2 bags cranberries
2 boxes orange jello (8 oz or 1 16oz box)

1. Get all ingredients together, including 3 pint-sized mason jars with lids.

2. In a large saucepan, mix sugar into water and pour in the two bags of cranberries.

3. Over high heat, boil until you hear the cranberries pop. (Yep, when they're done, they pop!)

4. Remove from heat and add both boxes of orange jello. Stir well to incorporate the jello into the sauce. (Sauce will be thin)

5. Spoon into mason jars, filling each well. (If you have enouch for another jar, go for it, but I never do. All I usually have left is some of the "juice")

6. Put lids on the jars fingertight. (Not overly "I need a jackhammer and a miracle" tight) Place in large canning pot, cover the jars with water and set on high heat until boiling. You should see little bubbles emerging from the jars. Boil for about 5 minutes. (You may hear a jar "pop" closed in the process. Good, thyat's what you want.)

7. Remove jars and place on a counter to dry and cool. As the jars cool, you may hear "pop" sounds. That's the jar's lid sealing itself.

8. Refrigerate if you want, but I just stick 'em in a cupboard. They keep for about a year.

Copied and printed! :) Thanks - I'll let you know how it goes. Just saw on Good Eats a way to make microwave apple sauce and since I'm headed to the orchards next week for pie apples, I'm going to try it. I'm such a Susi Homemaker. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

Peaches 11-16-2004 06:57 PM

Oh, and can we just eat it w/o canning it?

Damn you, Tala...it's not enough that I make everything from scratch....

Now you're giving me a recipe for homemade cranberry sauce....

and, I feel compelled to create it.....damn you....LOL

aimeesweet 11-16-2004 08:27 PM

I always make my own....it's really easy...Just follow the instuctions on the bag, but if you want to make it a little more exciting add some orange zest(grate the skin) and a little orange juice...It is soooooo good like that!!!

foolio 11-16-2004 08:31 PM

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww I hate that stuff - but never had any home made stuff.. may give it a shot
