"On a day of national mourning and prayer, a Boca Raton company had its managers confiscate American flags from employees' cubicles, saying other workers might find them offensive.
NCCI Holdings Inc., a company that compiles workers compensation insurance data, told its 850 Boca Raton employees that displays of nationalism had no place in the office.
"Divisive statements or actions, political or religious discussions and anything else that could be divisive or mean different things to different people are not appropriate in our work environment," Chief Executive Officer Bill Schrempf said Friday in a memo to employees."

I know of a high school girl (son's friend) who was sent home this past week for wearing a t-shirt with the american flag on it. No words or phrases, just the flag. Here in Florida USA

I'm from Boca Raton... It has a very high Indian population... mostly because of FAU.

I think you should all stop bitching -- the American flag is a symbol of freedom and independence! I'm free to wave an American flag AND to NOT wave an American flag... That is a luxury that I am thankful for as an American.

The woman who accepted being suspended rather than take our flag down should be identified and interviewed. Whoever she is, she is the Rosa Parks of good citizenship. Her willingness to accept financial loss rather than surrender the ideals that led her to support the thousands of American victims, most of whom remained buried in the burning ruins of ground zero even as she was being shown the door, is an example of nobility and simple decency.

I also hope the media will ask Gov. Jeb if Florida will do business with NCCI or with companies that do business with NCCI, until NCCI reconsiders its policy of applying a boot to the face of grieving, patriotic, Americans. <A href="[email protected]">Bill Schrempf's</A> outrageous memo claiming the presence of our flag is divisive and controversial would make sense only from the perspective of the Taliban government or Bin Laden himself. I am NOT condoning what the Boca Raton company did, in ANY way. I think it's disgusting. But this is the kind of knee-jerk reaction that starts riots. Do some research before making statements like that.

eRock, I don't know about where you are, but my children here in So. Calif. say the Pledge of Allegiance every school day, in front of the flag. While I don't know about how mandatory it is, I've never heard if it being banned in any way.

As for the T-shirt thing, there may be other reasons the shirt wasn't allowed. Unless someone was involved personally, I'd suggest not making things worse than they are by speculating wildly.

Upon VERY CLOSE examination of both the NCCI.COM (National Counsel on Compensation Insurance, a PUBLICLY OWNED American company based in Boca Raton, Florida), as well as NCCI.COM.SA (National Company for Cooperative Insurance, a Saudi company based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), I have determined that the two companies ARE NOT one in the same !!!

I did extensive WHOIS reports on both domains, as well as Boolean searches on both corporations.

They are two separate companies, (although both in the insurance field), who happen to share the same abbreviation for their company names.

I do not support Mr Schrempf's actions to ban patriotism in the office, but I also do not think that it is fair that his company be misrepresented as the same corporation as the Saudi based one in this thread ...

During this time of grief and anger, is is very easy to jump to conclusions, and to wrongly crucify somebody, as a result of inaccurate information .... This is not right.

Sure ... maybe to some of you, believing that Mr. Schrempf is affiliated with that "towel-head" company would give you the satisfaction of venting some of your bottled up hatred, ... but what if YOU were the one who's company was being confused as been Arab ?!?

Not a very pleasant predicament to be in, is it ???

Actually Pete... There is a very big point you missed. Sure it's the companies "right" to tell workers they can't have american flags around, or can't wear pants, whatever. But, is it right? I mean comon.

This is a US company, on US soil, serving (assumedly) US customers. If the company isn't proud to be, (or at least tolerant) part of the US they have no business being here.

Only reason this got press was because of the attacks, but if they banned them any other time I'd be just as pissed. I mean what the fuck, it's an american *FLAG*. It's not a fucking symbol of racism or any other such thing.

It's not a question of whether it's legal or not, it's a question of whether it's RIGHT or not. And it certainly is NOT right.

This same company probably has an american flag flying high in front of it's corporate campus. Blah.
