Saddam Got $21 Billion from UN Oil Program

Apparently Saddam wasn't suffering at all from UN sanctions, but his people were. This is old news, but now we have an actual number to work with.

Bigwilly 11-15-2004 02:19 PM

have you seen his houses, do you think he was really suffering?

webmaster x 11-15-2004 02:20 PM

That was the line that anti-war protestors gave. I knew Saddam was building palaces a long time ago, I was close to several people in the intelligence community when I was in the military.

I remember the press with months and months of news about finding him....now what the fuck are we doing with him?

Rich 11-15-2004 03:09 PM

I don't understand, when the US buys oil from Saddam during the time he's gassing people it's ok, but the UN doing it during the time he's in a mayonnaise jar is wrong. I don't get it captain.

We're not doing shit with him, the Iraqis have him. We turned him over the same day the interim government took over, June 20th.

We are not doing shit with him, because we turned him over to the Iraqi interim government. I already posted this, read the thread.

And I wonder how much money Bush+Halliburton and Co are getting, meanwhile many people are starving and have no healthcare.

fuck bush

Rich 11-15-2004 03:24 PM

Actually if you guys want to know, he was going to be tried by the joke of an Iraqi court set up by America. Of course, no reporters were allowed to record anything under, um, "Iraqi" orders. Unfortunelty, the judge the US set up was the unqualified brother of Ahmed Chalabi, the guy who supplied all the bogus information before the war and whom they were going to install as the "interim prime minister". Unfortunately for the US, everyone found out how corrupt the Chalabis are, and they were both arrested and jailed by other countries. Kind of put a damper in Bush's election plan for a big Saddam trial.

They don't talk about Ahmed Chalabi on CNN anymore.

The problem there is that buying oil would have just lined Saddam's pockets. The people wouldn't have been any better off. What we should have done is simply not bought Iraqi oil and asked the UN to pass a resolution that bars anyone in the UN from buying Iraqi oil. That would have starved Saddam out of power very quickly. Unless the french, germans and russians decided to prop him up for some oil, like they were doing in the Food For Oil program.

Who would have taken power once he fell? Do you realize how many dictators the US props up because they comply with the US? Do you realize they overthrow unfriendly democratically elected presidents to install friendly dictators in oil rich nations? You're saying that because America doesn't buy oil from one particular dictator, no one else should either?

Goes right into Bush and crooked friends of his and Dicks at Haliburtons pockets. Iraqi people will see none of it, unless they drive on by our 14 new permanent and immaculate state of the art military bases we are building along the oil lines in the country.

The general line given by those against the war is that Saddam was being starved by UN sanctions and would have had to step down anyway. I'm simply saying that isn't true due to the Food For Oil program and the only way to starve Saddam out of power would have been for the UN to pass a resolution to not accept any oil from Iraq for any goods or services, period.

This other individual tried to argue that America should have bought Iraqi oil so that the Iraqi people would have had more money in their economy. I'm denying that would have happened and that Saddam would have taken all that money himself to build more palaces. We would have been enabling him rather then helping the Iraqi people.

In the end there wasn't much of anything we could have done to help the Iraqi people.

Then why are you complaining about the UN program and not the fact that America bought oil from him? And why aren't you posting about the horrible dictators the US currently supports? Just curious is all.

Fuck em. Its not our job nor our right to go into every country and imposs our will for what we believe their citizens should be recieving.

Let them sort it out for themselves as most history shows happens in time. Civil unrest and if its bad enough a revolt.

There are plenty of countries in this world who treat their citizens like shit. Yet we are nowhere to be found... wonder why?

I think we should be in Africa right now so we can poach all their safari animals and sell for major profit on the black market, errr I mean liberate their people. Oh poaching profits arn't worth it? Only oil gets us wet? Fair enough.

Ridiculous.

1. That's not what this thread is about.

2. I don't know which dictators we support, or else I would be bitching about it.

3. I don't really care what dictators we support, as that's not an issue that I'm particularly interested in just now. If I become more interested in it, I'll research it and bitch about it, but right now I'm apathetic to that subject. I've got enough to bitch about just now and if I get much more to bitch about I might just explode. If I explode, then I can't finish school because my wife will be busy cleaning up the mess I leave from exploding.

AMEN! :glugglug

BTW, it's not easy to get an atheist to shout "amen". Congrats. :winkwink: :thumbsup

It just seems like if you're going to worry about something, what the US does would be more important to concern yourself with than a measly 21 billion dollars for a harmless little dictator like Saddam.

Harmless? He was shooting at me during a cease fire. That's hardly harmless.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm? I participated in Operation Northern Watch for 2 deployments. Saddam agreed to the northern no-fly zone as part of his surrender. We partrolled that are along with coalition forces during a time a cease fire and while we were doing that Saddam was regularly wheeling out SAM sites to shoot at coalition aircraft. I don't appreciate being shot at during a time of cease fire. Why it took 17 resolutions, 12 years and a bunch of BS excuses from a dumbass from Texas to kick his ass is beyond me. None the less, shooting at us during a time of cease fire is enough reason to kick his ass, IMHO.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't have been there at all. However since we were there, the UN has shown the world that it is impotent in dealing with people like Saddam, because members of the security council kept vetoing action due to the kick backs they were getting from Saddam. Can you say "conflict of interest"?

OK, I think I'm done with that rant now. :)
