What is a good program to do a batch thumbnailing of an image ... yet keeps good quality and keeps file size low

arles does a pretty good job

i have a simple php file that will do that for you..

upload your pictures to a directory then run the gallery.php file and it creates your thumbs in a directory of your choice and makes a gallery for them.
