vbullettin, thumbs up, though the older versions can be hacked/hijacked, it happened to me once. so make sure you get the latest release.

I like my phpBB. It's free, you can mod it, and it self-installs on your server. It's also easy to understand and fun to use, imho.

I'll hit ya and give ya the one that I'm working with right now. :)

Because it costs money and a lot of forum users are aware of it. By spending money on the forum, you are showing dedication to your users. PHPBB might be good to kick off or beta test a forum but once it gets some decent activity, switch to VB.

There are many other reasons why VB is better. Too many to list . You get what you pay for

What about security, I dont want people hacking my board and messing with peoples html and switching stuff around. Which is better for security, if not the board then is it the host?

webmaster x 11-14-2004 01:06 PM

vbulletin, is my choice.

Mike Okitch 11-14-2004 02:32 PM

vbulletin all the way.

IMHO, it's just easier to customize.

My icq # is in my sig, I'll be here most of the day so hit me up anytime you want :)

Vbulletin rulez over PHPbb !

DaLord 11-14-2004 02:37 PM

phpbb will eat your server alive if you get many visitors and vB won't. Easy as that.

When I got over 1000 members my server went down 1-2 times per week.
After I installed vB I was never down again.

If they want to hack it that bad let them. Just be sure to backup the forum database every day or two or less (depending on the activity) so if a hacker or a mod wants to piss you off, you only lose a days worth of content and they will find their mission pointless and not bother again.

VB a lot a bit harder to set up but if you know how to follow instructions you should have no problem.

What are the reasons, though? I see alot of people say vBulletin but never state reasons. Is phpBB that vulnerable?

just look in the admin panel of em both, that right there will be enough to convince you.

VB = total control of everything. Can handle LAREG amounts of users on at once (gfy)

phpBB = just a very basic forum setup. Very good for smaller activity boards...Get lots of users online and trying to post at once, it will kill your server..

Jayo 01-31-2005 04:34 PM

VB is the best.. Way better than PHPBB!

Echo 01-31-2005 04:54 PM

vb is much better than phpbb...
like they say vb can handle large activity rather than phpbb :)
