Some Thoughts Toward A Solution

Airliners already have a kind of panic button to tell the ground that they are being hijacked. Imagine that this would also put the plane under control from the ground with no pilot overrides. Now, imagine that the plane is diverted to a military airport.

The only option left the hijackers would be to blow up the plane, but (sad to say) blowing up a plane with 70 or 80 people in it is preferable to a repeat of what happened on Tuesday.

That's a really good idea BUT imagine the cost and difficulty of installing that on ALL the tens of thousands (or more) airplanes already built. Plus, there's always the fear of the signals that would transmit commands to the plane to be intercepted and subsequently allowing naughty people to give commands to the plane.

Build a better mouse trap and someone will build a better mouse.

Well i like the Idea still of making the Dual Cockpit doorway each about 2" thick titanium with some really top notch locking devices, and if your going to say they will just use a bomb to get through them by that point you will have a hole in the plane and it will probally crash at that point.

What about making a kind of no fly zones.
If a plain tries to enter such a zone, the automatic pilot will take over and flies the plain out of that area.
A automatic pilot is even capable of landing a plain by itself ...
Coordinates can be entered by flight control in this way there is no need to fly the plain from the cockpit and the plain can be directed to where ever it's safe to land it.
Of course if the system is activated by entering a no fly zone there is no way to over ride it from the plain itself http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

I heard a great idea last night. Put a doorway in the cockpit leading outside and NO door to the cabin. Completely seal it off with no window. Have a video camera in the cabin and a monitor in the cockpit. In the event of a problem, pilot lands the plane. That means, hijackers would know, they cant get into the cabin, if they want the plane down, they'll have to blow it.

the primary objective of the authorities during a hijack is to bring the crew and passengers to safety. A ´metal´ door or a ´remote control´ isn´t gonna secure the passengers, it might endanger them even more. Remember this is the first hijack plane that was used to blow up something else. For such situation this might be an improvement, but for the other dozen of planes that get hijacked it will only make the situation more dangerous.

If a hijacker has NO access to the cockpit and even if the pilot wanted to turn over the plane, he couldnt, then it would be a deterrent. Why bother hyjacking, if you can get to the pilot.

people do not hijack planes to get a free flight to any destination in the world..

people hijack planes to get attention. It´s about the passengers, not about the plane nor the cockpit crew. Anyway if the hijackers threaten to systematically kill the passengers ANY pilot will open that metal door. A ´remote control´ forces the hijackers to become suicidal. During a normal Hijacking situation a hijacker will command the pilot to fly to a destination from which he can flee and dissappear. this could mean the survival of the passengers and the crew. If this only ´exit´ route for the hijackers is blocked the chances of there survival will get very small and so will chances of the survival of the crew and passengers because the´ll have nothing to lose.

They already have that but without the remote ground control. They said that on those plane the emergency signal wasn't activated.

i say use big metal vault doors for the cockpit...the same ones the banks use..and
always have one armed security gaurd for each flight...doesnt this make sense?

How about a US Marshall on every plane with a fuckin' UZI.
