Just changed mb and processor in my brother in law computer.
Loaded Windows XP sp2, connect find to internet, can download proggies from newsgroups, but can't download from the net, let say download.com.
Download promts open, cave as and it just hangs there.
I did many boxes and never seen this...

Any idea ???

I has installed XP french before and had the same problem. Reinstalled system ( format NTFS ) and still ...

I/m ready toi shove the unit out in the garden...

could it be an issue related to ie? Try downloading with a different browser.

using a proxy connection?

check and see if its off, if you are going though a proxy it could be stopping you.

Maybe try this:

No proxy ... Firewall off ... No AV ... I just installed XP , that's it ...

Like I say, I connect to sites on the net no problem, pages after pages ... but can't download a file...

Am doing this now. Thanks

But why would firefox not work also.

Ping works, net works, Agent ( newsgroups) works fine even for downloads ... and it is a fresh and clean install....

??????

hmm, it doesnt sound like you have configuration problems at all. What other software is running? p2p apps lag applications saving into their shared directory.. *cough* limewire shareaza

Nope... clean install... didn't load any proggies except firefox ( agent was on previous install).

Am changing CPU in a few minutes, just to see. ..

directfiesta 11-13-2004 08:47 PM

Not the CPU ....

MB ???

Think i'll scrap the whole thing... that unit started with:

- blown PS hahahaha=> replaced by new 500 watts

to realize that :

- cooked MB hahahahahahahaha= > new MB and CPU

to realise that :

- seized HD hahahaha=> new 40 gig

to realise that :

- CD-rom turns but that's it hahahaha> new burner

Install system - windows protection error hahahahahahahaha> bad memory

So changed memory

Floppy works fine

What a lost of time

Can you d/l with FTP? SSH?

If you can, and cannot d/l through the web, then it might be a security setting? Maybe a firewall or something blocking port 80?

I don't know XP, sorry I cannot offer more. But if you can download mail, FTP, SSH, Usenet etc. and not through HTTP it sounds like a port being filtered. :2 cents:

dozey 11-13-2004 09:01 PM

Seems unlikely that everything would freeze up just because of a blocked port. I would have expected ie to just give you an error.

reloading millenium, and if it doesn't work, that is it:

I QUIT ....
