Don't promote GUBA.com

http://www.guba.com/image/Erotica/Am...le/Nov13/page1

Don't promote them for fucks sake.

They are a USENET binary service provider and 99.99% of the material on it has been stolen from paysites, ie. copyright infringement

Think about it, why would someone who signs up to it ever pay for porn again? He/she would have access to more than 1 TeraByte of copyright material a day that is posted to it!

The Oracle Porn 11-13-2004 02:16 PM

same reason kazaa users signup to paysites...

Project-Shadow 11-13-2004 02:18 PM

Erm considering most ISP's provide Usenet access for free.. might as well get the suckers to pay for it.

Fabien 11-13-2004 02:19 PM

Oh yeah i forgot
Welcome to planet earth :warning

nmcog 11-13-2004 02:21 PM

all episodes and updates, be it pics or vids get posted to it from 100s of members-only sections of paysites.

there is even newsgroups dedicated to certain sites, e.g. alt.binaries.wifey is for wifeysworld.com's content

Dawgy 11-13-2004 02:33 PM

so if theyre serving my copyrighted images from their servers, and i didnt sell the images to them, i guess i can sue eh?

Hansm 11-13-2004 02:41 PM

you can sue the POSTER, not GUBA.

usenet is nice but theres only illegal shit now, nothing more.

Exactly. Guba just makes it easier, freeloaders don't have to worry about the service, retention, software, configuration because GUBA makes it simple for them.

Look at it this way, you run a music shop and sell albums, singles, dvds, etc. yet in the corner, you set up 20 PCs with 100Mbit internet connection with Kazaa and all the shitty p2p software installed. You charge a fee of $1/day for unlimited usage. How the fuck is that gonna help your CD sales?

nudecanada 11-13-2004 02:58 PM

Color Climax successfully sued someone posting their images to newsgroups.

Also, Alsscan.com sued Supernews and won.
http://eric_goldman.tripod.com/casel...vsupernews.htm

I forget who said it, but some wise person said Usenet was the biggest copyright violation online. And it is. :2 cents:

nudecanada, did you read the docs you posted?

from your document:

ALS Scan did not provide RemarQ with such notice in this case. Indeed, the complaint it filed in this action did not specifically identify either the infringed works or the allegedly infringing works. Thus, ALS Scan has failed to meet the knowledge element of its claim

and then again a year later the decision was:

Accordingly, for the reasons given, we reverse the district court's decision to grant summary judgment in favor of RemarQ, affirm the district court's decision not to grant summary judgment in favor of ALS Scan, and remand this case for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.

Bah, I just read the alsscan docs. I was wrong. lol

I thought they won, I remember this lawsuit.

I haven't seen any alsscan newsgroups that are actually active anymore. Maybe they won something - or scared enough people to have the newsgroups dropped?

Theo 11-13-2004 03:25 PM

Yeah, they caused them some hassle but it seems they picked a company with significant financial assets to sue.

"RemarQ Expands network to more than 1,000 Web sites and ISPs Raises $20 million in equity funding from Attractor Investment Management, Benchmark Capital, Bowman Capital Management, Capital Research Management, BayStar Capital, LP and Pivotal Capital"

and they had raised 4 more mil the year before.
