What type of guitar should I buy?

I"m thinking to buy an electric guitar and amp to start learning how to play when I'm bored.

Any recommendations for a beginner? I'll probably learn reading tabs of the net or just fucking around.

All depends on how much you really want to spend, i've got 2 electrics now.

Ibanez S470 DX
http://www.guitarstrings.co.uk/_data...zS470dxABM.jpg

And a Platinum BC Rich Beast [In black]
http://www.bcrich.com/images/hi_res/..._Tombstone.jpg

If you've got the money go for something simpler like the Ibanez.. cause the BC is really a gig guitar.. and nothing else.

Your local music shop will have a starter kit for $150-200 which will include a bog standard guitar, 10w amp, case and leads.. if you're lucky a distortion pedal, and that is probably your best bet.

The beast looks awesome :thumbsup

I'd probably want to spend 500-600$ for both the guitar and the amp.....Thing is I"m not sure what I can find here in Costa Rica of any quality :helpme

Nydahl 11-13-2004 04:05 AM

any Fender you can find

dennisthemenace 11-13-2004 05:46 AM

If you've never played, don't waste money on getting good equipment. You might end up not liking it and having the stuff sit and collect dust.

Start with the cheapest you can find and THEN get better if you work up to it.

oberheimer 11-13-2004 06:06 AM

Maybe a Rickebacker, there really nice

http://www.rickenbacker.com/images/650dx.gif

The above post is good advice.

Ibanez makes some good low-end guitars for around $300.

Also, if you sign up on musiciansfriend they will send you a catalog with all the fun stuff you will ever need.

If you are serious about learning to play, you should get a decent guitar. I would recommend getting the nicest Stratocaster you can afford, and go cheap on the amplifier.

webair 11-13-2004 08:54 AM

ive got a few guitars that i would recommend to you, but you want to buy one that will dramatically increase in price in the next year or 2 have a look at this:

http://www.charvel.com/

SongRider 11-13-2004 08:59 AM

Find a couple of music stores there close to you and go play a few before you do anything. Guitars are like a woman... They are ALL different and if you choose a bad one you will never play it..... BUT, if you choose a good one you wont EVER want to put it down!! :thumbsup

You can ALWAYS order it from musicians friend but you will have an idea of what your getting after you test drive a few....

An american Strat, not chinese.

underzen 11-13-2004 09:34 AM

My first electric was a Fender Strat (tex-mex). Cheap at only 60 bucks off of ebay.

Dam thing sounded like shit. But then again I beat the shit out of it two.

Dirty F 11-13-2004 09:40 AM

My next guitar will be a Fender Paisley:

I want an original/old one tho, not a new one.

For a great all around guitar, go with the Strat.

MattO 11-13-2004 11:17 AM

I buy my guitars from this guy:
http://www.chrisguitars.com/
he's always got new stuff coming in, sometimes you find a real gem. Got a good return policy too. And he takes trades. I've been trading up for a while till I finally have a kick ass real Les Paul.

smack 11-13-2004 11:17 AM

Ibanez or Fender. nothing else comes close.

thehand 11-13-2004 11:28 AM

I say go big...even from the start:
Get a Vintage Jackson USA RR.
http://www.umenaka.com/syasin/syasin...n%20RRV.50.jpg
I'll sell you this on for 2000:
http://superfreaklive.com/galleryoldschool/beat1.jpg

mookienow 11-13-2004 11:36 AM

I'd go with a american strat.
You can get any sound you want out of one.

PRS would be my second choice, great guitar.. You truley can get ANY sound out of a PRS.

Contrary to an earlier post, a strat sounds like a strat, not nearly as versitile as a PRS.

Varius 11-13-2004 01:13 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions guys....I found few music stores here so am going to go checkout what they have and at what prices....

I'm hesitant to order anything online because I'm not too confident it will actually arrive here in Costa Rica without being stolen by customs or the mail people

Your definitly right there...but ,if money isnt an problem .why not go with top of the line.

First, if you're serious about playing guitar do NOT be too cheap with your first guitar. Inexpensive guitars are no fun to play, and sound like shit. People always say, "Get something cheap first, and move up later if you like it." That is Bullshit..a crummy guitar that is impossible to play will destroy your confidence. All $200 guitars are pure crap from my experience.

Don't spend less than $300 bucks on a guitar. Get one that is set-neck construction and string thru body bridge. Schecter, ESP, Ibanez, Dean, all make nice beginner guitars in the $300-400 range. Get something that looks cool!

I would recommend this ibanez
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/519641/

It's OK to get a cheap amp to start with, cuz almost anything can sound good at bedroom volume. More expensive amps are for playing in bands and stuff (worry about that later). An excellent begginer amp is something simple like this $100 crate http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/487782/ If you've got a little more money buy a $200 line6 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/482255/

The crate is a basic amp with distortion channel, clean channel and reverb. Perfect for a bedroom beginner. THe line6 has a bit more power and effects like delay and phaser etc. The line6 will be more fun to experiment with but both are cool to start out

If you don't have the cash for a good guitar yet...save a bit and be serious - good luck and have fun

Thanks, like I said I'm prob looking for something in the 500-600$ range to start off so the guitar/amp combo you've listed falls in there nicely.

Now it's a matter of seeing what music stores out here actually have available :1orglaugh

Yeah....I'll prob find out Monday....

At worst I'm thinking I can find something decent in Vegas in January while I'm there for Internext

Varius 11-14-2004 09:09 PM

Looked around today and didn't find much out here. Decided to go for a place that was selling a combo for $250:

Palmer Deluxe
Guitar case/bag
Strap
Winder
Cable
Kustom Amp
Picks

Started some online tutorials tonight and have learnt my G, C and D chords pretty easily. Fingers still pretty stiff though, guess it will take practice everyday to loosen them up.

Anyone know though, when learning should I have it plugged in and the amp on? Right now it sounds pretty bad without using the amp......but could just be the brand or the fact I havent tuned it yet.

Yeah - you can find that in Vegas really easily. There's a Guitar Center on Tropicana Avenue just about 5-10 minute drive from the Vegas strip. It's right next to Walmart so you can't miss it. They've got all the stuff I suggested earlier and an excellent selection of Schecter diamond series guitars

Goatse 11-15-2004 11:45 AM

Buy an old Gibson and plug it into an old Marshall Plexi. If you sound like crap, don't blame it on your gear.

I don't think a beginner should start on an electric, but a nylon string accoustic. The strings are farther apart and easier on the fingers so you can develope callouses without hurting your fingers too much. :2 cents:

"the quality is equal to any of Fender's American product." Bullshit, that's a cheap ass neck and head on that axe. That makes me wonder if the price is entirely the design on the body. If you want to pay an extra $350 for a design, on a $150 guitar, be my guest. :2 cents:
