That's what got me, when I pulled up to the ATM he was there berating her as she was loading the groceries, and one of the managers was out there having his smoke watching it all.

When I finished with the ATM, I had the car running and he started throwing blows at her, the manager was still there watching, that was enough for me, I had to call 911.

I had left my cellphone at the home office but it just ticked me off with the number of cellphones in the world (a full well lite parking lot) no one was willing to use one and say 'some dude is beating the crap out of some chick, can you send a car here' and hang up.

What did it take me, five minutes out of my life to call 911, describe the two, their ballpark ages, and stay on long enough for the cruisers to show?

I'm sorry, it crushes me to see some lady get beat on in the first place, but its worse when maybe 30-50 people are possibly viewing this and doing nothing about it.

I really wish there was some sort of reinforcement to the general public that there is no shame in calling the police if something just doesn't look right to you.

others are just too afraid to get involved....they don't give a shit on what's happening around them as long as they were doing fine, though some has negative experience for they are the one who get accused in the end

I understand how you feel. If this is of any consolation, it doesn't indicate a crumbling of civilization. In fact it's ALWAYS been this way in urban cities...quite possibly in other areas too. One reason is that people just don't want to get involved, sometimes they're afraid of reprisals if they get involved. If you confront him, next thing you know he's put a bullet in you or if he sees you calling what he thinks are the police. Their are other reasons too. Their is an infamous case that occured in the 50's where a woman was raped and killed in the heart of New York City. Lots of people INSIDE the comfort and safety of their building who could see what was happening across the street to the woman did nothing. Why? They all assumed somebody else would call.

Let's hope he gets his just desserts.

Sure doesn't make you feel nice knowing how other people will react in these situations. Imagine if you were a victim or needed help. I think you did the right thing by calling the cops.

I read about that a few months back, even though it happened a long ass time ago. The thing is, she was beaten and raped, and the guy left. Then he came back an hour later and beat her some more and left again. He came back an hour later again and beat her some more and left again. This all began in the middle of the night, 1 am I think. She was found at 6 am, but she had died at 4 or 5 am. The whole time there were people obviously watching the whole thing from their apartment windows and no one did shit about shit. Reading that made me REALLY mad.

I witnesses a situation kind of like that before.. I saw a guy slug his gf so I jumped in, slugged him and guess what? she says

"You fucking asshole! Why did you to that to him? I love him"

So I said fuck this and left. Helping isn't always the best option

In my younger days I would have maybe jumped in to stop it.

Now having a family of my own and having a responsibilty to keep myself alive and healthy and out of jail to take care of them and hearing about so many times the man and woman turning on the guy trying to help, I have new rules.

I will never start a fight.
I will never try to break up a fight especially domestic violence and I will immediately call the cops very discreetly as I guess you did.

The only exception to this is if I see a child being hurt or in danger. Then I will jump in no matter what.

I've seen the same thing happen once outside a bar. Some guy hits his girlfriend, other dudes jump him, she starts attacking the dudes that jumped her boyfriend. They all got arrested when the cops showed up.

Damn, another reason not to get directly involved. Btw, what happens in this situation? I wonder if the dude that was trying to be helpful winds up getting charged. That would suck doubly.

It just fucks with me that no one is willing to help their fellow man or woman. I'm looking at a new business venture that means I will be carrying lots of cash on me (legitimately before you wiseguys get any ideas).

Funny thing is Illinois' not a CCW state but my friends with the Chicago Police are already shopping for guns for me, because in today's day and age its a given that after you comply completely with your attacker instructions, they will still shoot to kill you.

They said I'm better off putting 3-4 slugs into the perp if they produce a gun, and ask for all my money. Mind you I want an opinion from my lawyer first but I kinda have to agree with the cops on this one.

Kitty Genovese had driven home in the early morning of March 13, 1964. Arriving home at about 3:15 a.m. and parking about 100 feet from her apartment's door, she was approached by a man named Winston Moseley. Genovese may have changed direction towards a nearby police call box, but Moseley overtook her and stabbed her. Genovese screamed out; her cries were heard by several neighbors, one of whom shouted at the attacker. Moseley ran away, and Genovese made her way towards her own apartment, seriously injured.

Witnesses observed Moseley enter his car and drive away, only to return five minutes later. He systematically searched the apartment complex, following the trail of blood to Genovese, who was laying, barely conscious, in a hallway. He proceeded to rape and rob her, finally delivering a fatal stab wound. The entire attack had lasted (albeit intermittently) for approximately half an hour.

A few minutes after the final attack a witness, Karl Ross, called police. (He may not have been the first to call, but records of any earlier calls are unclear and were certainly not given a high priority by the police). Police and medical personnel arrived within minutes of Ross's call; Genovese was taken away by ambulance and died en route to the hospital. Later investigation revealed that at least 38 individuals nearby had heard or observed portions of the attack. Many were entirely unaware that an assault or homicide was in progress; some thought that what they saw or heard was a lover's quarrel.

Moseley, a business machine operator, was later apprehended in connection with another crime; he confessed not only to the murder of Kitty Genovese, but to two other murders as well, both involving sexual assaults. Subsequent psychiatric examinations suggested that Moseley was a necrophiliac.

Media attention of the Genovese murder led to reform of the NYPD's telephone reporting system; the system in place at the murder was often inefficient and directed individuals to the incorrect department. The dramatic press coverage also led to serious invesigation of the bystander effect by academic psychologists. In addition, some communities organized neighborhood watch programs and the equivalent for apartment buildings to aid people in distress.

It should be noted that although the idea of "38 onlookers who did nothing" is often cited, this is a misleading conception which began with an investigative article in the New York Times written by journalist Martin Gansberg and published two weeks after the murder. The article begins:

For more than half an hour thirty-eight respectable, law-abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens.

This lead, although dramatic, is factually inaccurate. None of the witnesses observed the attacks in their entirety. Because of the layout of the complex and the fact that each attack took place in a different location as Genovese attempted to flee her attacker, it would have been physically impossible for a witness to have seen the entire attack. Most only heard portions of the incident; a few saw small portions of the initial assault. No witnesses directly saw the final rape and attack in an exterior hallway which resulted in Genovese's death.
